Have key from the piano puzzle where to next?

I went across the hall to the door that has the gate. I ran into one of the daughters and died.
Duke is out of stock of my meds and I do not have any. Do I need anything in that room besides the herb? Will the key unlock a door in the main house? One of the daughters walks the second floor hallway and one is dead. So where should I explore next? Mom always finds me she just comes out of know where.

From the piano where you got the key (Opera room iirc), you can unlock a door on the 1st floor. You'll circle back to the main hall and will have to avoid Lady D unfortunately.
