Do people still like linear based games?
I guess I really just couldnt get into games like Dying Light or Horizon Zero dawn due to just how much walking there is in that game. It's whatever, not my type of game. Was made for the majority of people and that's fine, but like.
I feel like Resident Evil Village was the latest game to sort of be that one time I was genuinely excited to play a game in recent memory, well. This game and Doom eternal maybe. I guess my favorite game of all time has got to be the original F.E.A.R, slowly followed by Dead Space2.
I kind of like ADACA but I can't help but feel as though my dwindalling interest in gaming has less to do with growing old, but really the market not appealing to my niche... unless anyone else has suggestions.

FEAR is without a doubt one of the best though I preferred Dead Space 1 rather than 2.
Are you asking for game recommendations? Or opinions about age & the changing market?
I'm getting older too and my motivation to play has lessened but I thought it was just me getting lazy. But maybe you're right and it is about the availability of suitable games. If you liked FEAR maybe check out Trepang2. It isn't out yet but it's FEAR re-imagined, and there's a demo if you want a quick test. It's pretty good.

Oh I love Trepang2, I will 100% buy that game on release. Same thing with selaco.
As for the question, opinions on changing market / game recommendations. Both really...

I see you have good taste, I like B.J.Blazkowicz & the gang too, though I haven't played the daughters. And Condemned, great game.
Selaco looks good, thanks for that. I think they've just stopped making games for adrenaline junkies. The market and development is at the whim of the media and games like FEAR & Doom3 (for example) are old news. It seems like people want something different; something less intense, more fun. Personally that sounds boring to me but there you go, my idea of fun 'is' intense but we're a dying breed.. Recommendations? I don't really follow trends and can only point you backwards. Have you played, The Suffering - Prison is Hell (the first game), ? Somebody reminded of me that recently. Or Painkiller? Neither equal FEAR or Doom3 but both are reasonably intense combat. There are more but you know that.

edit; I'm not sure where you'd find The Suffering, maybe GOG.

Yes, the sequel Bloodshot was been on my 'todo' list too. But because I doubted it would ever come to PC I was hoping I'd find a cracked port so I could at least have a look at the game. Unfortunately it never happened.

edit; cracked port idea was because I once played the original Silent Hill on PC using an emulator, but somebody else had already built the emulator into the game for me, they did a nice job.
Point being, you could emulate Bloodshot.

Got another one, Hard Reset.
Redux has an extra weapon (katana), a new enemy (human-ish), less enemy spawns and they added a dodge mechanic. Redux is easier.
The Steam Store is a little confusing but if you buy the Redux you'll get the Extended Edition & DLC free. Extended is the original game bundled with the DLC.

It's a hectic shooter and a lot of fun.

edit; I was just looking at some reviews for this online, some negative admittedly. This one in particular had me laughing;

Poor guy, sounds like he had a hard time (haha). Some of what he said is probably true but no game is perfect, and this one not only looks good but it's weapons are fun if you learn to use them and the gameplay can be chaos. Plus some parts of the environment are destructible and other parts can be used against enemies, that's always a bonus.
I stand by the recommend.

Yes. "Open world" games are overwhelmingly crap. Multiplayer-only games are even more crap.

I'm 31 so not really old but older than a lot of gamers it seems. I've grown tired of the open world craze. I hate climbing towers to open the map, I hate having a thousand collectibles everywhere-, I hate having a million icons on my maps, and I hate how generic everything is so the devs can fill the map. Linear or open environment games like the Village or the old RE games are much better imo. The smaller size lets the developers add in more details that really add to the character and atmosphere, and allow for environmental story telling. The last open world game I enjoyed was Dying Light which I felt really did open world gaming right. Lately I've been on a bit of a retro binge because a lot of new games coming out don't have any appeal. You really have to look hard these days to find something worth playing and even branch in to genres you don't normally play. I got Tormented Souls recently which is very Resident Evil inspired even including tank controls, I would give it a 7/10.

If you end up liking the demo you will like the full game. Some of the puzzles are pretty hard. RE puzzles tend to be put the square peg in the square hole but some of the puzzles in TS will really make you think.

Check out the Metro games:
Metro 2033,
Metro Last Light,
Metro Exodus

They are also linear story driven atmospheric action-horror games like RE with some awesome creature designs and worldbuilding.

Oh man, I've been trying for the life of me to finish those games, but every game has a tedius long cut scene that... jesus why didn't the developers incorporate a skip button to each cut scene. Would really add an optional feature that would make the game more accessible to more players.
That's just my opinion anyway.

open world games prolong your playtime with garbage side quests. If you skip all the side quest and only do main story, it will be the same as playing a linear game.
