Not all the games are connected. Some are best enjoyed if you played certain previous titles, as they continue plot lines introduced in those games so you might not understand where some things are coming from if you didn't. Generally speaking, you should NOT play:

Village before RE7
RE6 or RE Revelations 2 before RE5
RE5 before RE1, RE3, or RECV
RECV, RE2, or RE3 before RE1

RE7, even though there are plenty of entries before it, is a good starting point because it's the beginning of a new arc, so it requires no knowledge on previous games' events to fully understand the plot (you'll just miss a few easter eggs). Village, as you know, continues that arc (and ends it, or so it seems so far)

It has a few returning characters (two from RE2, one from RE1/RECV) but the plot is standalone, doesn't continue any plot lines from previous games.

Best played at least after RE2 if you want a better introduction to the familiar faces, but knowing who those characters are or where they come from doesn't really matter as far as the RE4 plot itself is concerned. You could replace those characters with new ones and the story would remain unaffected, so it's not like Village in which the returning characters are actually tied to the game plot.

The chronological order for the main series is 0 > 1 > 2 and 3 take place pretty much at the same time > Code Veronica > 4 > 5 > 6 > 7 > 8. You don't need to play them all in order since they're not always connected, but this the chronological order of events. There are spin offs too, but I wouldn't say they're important.

You don't need to play Biohazard 1 and 3(or RE:3) for 5. The old games don't really matter to that plot.

Code Veronica can be forgotten because Capcom retconed it and Operation Javier (Darkside Chronicles) with RE:4. Bye Steve and old Krauser
RE:3 retconed the best ending so you don't need to play the first one just to understand who is that mystery chopper pilot at the end who doesn't even matter anymore.
