For example (no spoilers at all here dw lol) there is a scene where one character gets separated. In my solo playthrough, I was playing as the character that was chasing after them trying to find and save them. But in my online playthrough with a friend, they were that character and I was the one who got separated trying to survive on my own, doing my best with QTEs until they find me.
Since there is no splitscreen, during local co-op the game can't possibly make you play 2 different characters at the same time on 1 screen. Which is why the game opts to let you pass the controller and make you play 1 character per scene. The only other difference is that during my solo playthrough, the scenes where characters are trouble. there were times where the game alternates between multiple characters so that solo players feel like they are responsible for saving multiple characters instead of 1 and making an AI decide the rest.
As far as different scenes go, you don't have to worry about missing out on anything! In all of the Dark Pictures games, you can never get the full experience from finishing it once anyway. This game is the only exception to that and I'd gladly explain why this has the least replay value but again, I don't want to enter spoiler territory :)
Hey Nexures! Just to confirm what Jackie B. Goode has kindly explained above, both local co-op (Movie Night) and online co-op (Shared Story) are playable at present.
For online co-op, both players will need to own a full copy of the game in order to play together, as the Friend Pass for Little Hope is no longer available / active.
In Movie Night, you assign characters to each local player, and then take it in turns to control them on a singular screen. This means that all players will see all events as they happen.
In Shared Story, you and your partner player will play different characters simultanously, experiencing elements of the story according to who you are playing. You may find that you swap to the other set of characters available at different parts of the game. You can choose to either communicate what you see happening with the other player or keep it to yourself for greater horror value and suspense.
I hope this helps!

does "movie night" exist in all anthology games?
You can experience most key scenes for yourself in solo playthroughs or by doing a Movie Night playthrough, so if you're wanting to see as much of the game as possible in a single playthrough, these two modes would probably be the way to go.
However, you might need to complete additional playthroughs and make different choices in order to explore every opportunity, secret and scene. These games are structured around the choices you make, so your experience can be very different if playing again and making different ones!
Movie Night as a mode is available in all four released Dark Pictures games alongside Shared Story as the online co-op mode. You can find both modes under "Don't Play Alone" in the menu.

I'm afraid not - Shared Story is online co-op, and uses two separate systems (player one and player two). If having two systems with two screens in the same room, you could play together that way, but not on the same system in split-screen or similar.

The default / intended behaviour is for all players to share / pass around a single controller, but I think I've read before that other players were able to make multiple controllers work if all connected simultaneously. I can't guarantee this though.

Hi there, it is not possible to play Shared Story cross-platform.
