Online or offline?
Greetings.

When I started playing I think I selected offline somewhere, since I don't do multiplayer.

After reading a bit of tips it seems that this isn't your typical multiplayer game where you can get bothered by others all the time, but rather a clever co-operative system where you don't actually meet the other players. Also you can indirectly help others by building things, and others' buildings can help you, is that about right?

Anyway, I've only just strarted the game, but I'm considering starting again in online mode, since it seems in options you can go offline if you want to, although I can't go online (greyed out).

So in short, do you guys recommend online or offline?

Thanks.

the game was 'intended' to be played online, in the sense that you're forming connections with other players, and the difficulty is generally balanced around that, i.e. until you form a chiral connection with a certain part of the map player structures won't spawn there

it is also possible to play online but disable spawning of other player's structures, that way you can still deliver cargo for them, you can still follow trails they've made and you can still co-operatively contribute to reconstructing and maintaining roads and structures but you obviously won't have their structures littering your world
this is the option i personally play on, but it does make the game a touch harder

Thanks. I think I'll restart in online mode, but just to be sure: When I start a new game in online mode, all the saves from the first game will be deleted, right?

Thank you.

I did try to start a new game, and there was no option to disable / enable online mode when starting, so I must have remembered that incorrectly (I started the game some months ago when I bought it on sale, but haven't really played it until now).

However I found this on the interweb somewhere:

In order to play online in Death Stranding, all you need to do is make sure you're connected to the internet then hit the Options button to pause the game. Make sure it says “Offline” in red at the top right part of the menu. If the “Offline” message isn't there, then you're actually already online!

So I was actually online the entire time without knowing it, since I didn't see that red message. And the previous saves were not gone, so I could go back to my old game after trying the 2nd game for a bit, luckily.

This game is amazing! It has pulled me into its strands... :letsgo::longhaul::steamthumbsup:

Play online.

Play online - at least first for your major play-through - if you don't - you'll regret it in the final bit of the game.

You CAN be bothere by other players in the sense of unwanted structures in random places and an abundance of these digital signs players place scattered everywhere.

I opted to go with partial online. You don’t see other player structures, but other players can contribute resources to your sctructures, give you likes, and leave resources scattered around the map which you can pick up and use for yourself.

i'd say play online friend, i'd say some of the best moments i experienced in this game was when i either helped a player indirectly or had a player help me, and do know it doesn't make the game easier, unexplored areas in the game require to make a trip with no help from anyone, it's only when you're re-visiting areas where player help shines. and this game does want to make you feel less alone with that mechanic. hope you enjoy the game either way

Thanks guys. I do love the game. It's so atmospheric and 'real'! And that actor is perfect for the role.

Just had a few hours session, and encountered my first bad guys (mules?), as they scanned my cargo. I ran away like a scared rabbit! I haven't gotten any weapons yet (still have lots of tutorial stuff popping up, just reached the westerly waystation or something), and have no idea how to kill enemies. Or I think I read somewhere you're not supposed to kill them, since then they need to be carried to an incinerator.

I have to read up on combat somewhere, but for now I'll just try to sneak past them. Is there a way for them to prevent them from scanning my cargo later on, by the way?

Anyway, I actually love finding out stuff myself in these kind of games, so I shouldn't be asking :P

Anyway, I think this is the best game of this type I've tried since Fallout NV, although to be honest I can't quite compare it with other games.

Phew... I'm all shaky. I should stay off the coffee for my next session... :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

There is - but you won't find that out until you progress a bit more.

Personally? I go out of my way to beat the crap out of them to rob them blind and steal anything not nailed down. They are great places to farm gear and materials for building roads.

Good way to practice your fighting skills as you may not have handy "non-lethal" tools in abundance just yet.

Remember - don't kill them unless you want to clean up the nuclear bomb you just created.
You can run them over with your vehicles tho - just don't run them over....twice? :)

Favorite thing to do - Hit one off a truck with a truck of my own - totally fun to do.
