Just my perspective, not meaning to take this in an unexpected direction. My friend and I are playing with sharing off, just to avoid the annoying signage on an otherwise beautiful landscape. We are not too far along but so far enjoy the challenge of building and using what you bring into the zone. That said, I still often see 'contributions' from others but I have suspicions these are game generated from 'fake' game-generated players (the names are just 'off' to me). Maybe on next play thru I will turn sharing on.
I don't think it could work as you say, because in that case, if today I have builded a road, maybe tomorrow dissapears?
After all, it's still a solo player game so don't expect the road to appear out of nowhere.
It also makes sense, as the road also works as a checkpoint for maps and new area progression, event triggering, etc..., so eventually, you'll have to work on that. Or just play hard core and go around with no road.
I'm not sure how ziplines sharing system works.
But for the roads, there seems to be a clear repeating pattern. You can find and see all existing auto-pavers in any area right from the start, because they are not tied to your progression, like receiving any specific equipment etc.
But the key point is this:
if you still haven't connected map area where AP is located, to the chiral network, the AP won't be ever filled with any resources. I guess, at that time, it simply isn't considered shared. You can still build the corresponding road part from scratch, though it often would take crazy amount of resources.
But as soon as you connect area to the net, you'll almost immediately notice that corresponding APs get supplied with resources by players. I guess that's simply the moment when the game starts actual AP "sharing". I think you still have to FINISH all the roads yourself, but you will start with APs filled for about 2/3 or 3/4 of their capacity. That makes the task much easier. I think that's the intended mechanic they implemented, it's just different from other structures.
Yea I think it's because the internet/power/chiral line is literally the road, between each knot and city =)))))))))
that's why your vehicle gets energy charged while driving in the middle of the road, and visiting an unlinked knot won't do much since they have no physical link for internet access :P
Also note, your best source of materials is not the open world but the stations. The "Retrieve Material" function that they have. Most places have plenty to take from. After a certain point in the game, I'd say midway?, getting materials is very easy. You just need to do deliveries of the specific material (usually they are about 800+ deliveries) and you can retrieve it from the station you delivered to right away. Only thing you do need to farm is Chiral Crystals.
Back when I started playing this PC release on day 1, I took a long time in and around the first area of the game. When I finally moved on to Lake Knot City, that entire highway there was already built by people, way up far until the Craftsman. From there I had to mostly finish them myself.
Meanwhile and on contrast of this, a very small section of the road in front of the area of Distribution Center North of Mountain Knot City was built by someone after spending a lot of time in that area.
After I finished the game 4 months ago, there was no difference at all between that entire section of Distribution Center North of Mountain Knot City to Mountain Knot City itself, and yesterday when coming back to the game to see the CP77 update the numbers of materials needed to build the roads didn't even change between all this time I hadn't played.
I had to put in a LOT of materials to complete it yesterday. So I have no idea to what extent the game counts roads as a cooperative action, and when it appears to sort of 'lock out' contribution from others. If that's even a thing!
