How to not get caught by the BTs?
I don't understand how to avoid this mechanic. I'm playing on max difficulty.

Everytime the event starts up, I scan and look for BTs. I crouch down, hold breath. Sometimes the stupid scan doesn't even show them when they are actually there. Makes no sense.

Then the baby starts crying and I get caught.

I can't comfort the baby because the BTs are bearing down on me due to the noise. And I have to go through 32 menus to get to Comfort BB.

Then the black sludge comes under me and I get grabbed. 100% I get thrown down and dragged. I have to go through a long run to get out and then run back.

I'm at the beginning of the game but I don't want this ruining my deliveries later. I've gotten lucky and still managed to complete them, but I can see the missions getting harder.

Plus all my ♥♥♥♥ gets damaged.

Any help? I've never gotten through a BT field without detection. It seems impossible.

The scan always shows where they are.

IF YOU'RE STANDING STILL.

That's the key. Holding your breath isn't a factor in you detecting them. That's for sneaking past them once you know where they are.

They won't move until they actually detect you, so, stop, relax and scan while not moving.

Contrary to what the tooltip at the beginning of the game implies, simply standing still will make BTs visible and for a short window once you start moving again, provided BB isn't out of commission due to extreme stress. The scan pulse will make the outlines much more visible, which can be very helpful for detecting certain types of BTs that are often difficult to spot by eye.

The poster above is somewhat incorrect in that BTs do move on their own, but without a noise to follow they simply wander aimlessly within a small area. There are methods of dealing with BTs in a more effective manner than simply avoiding them, that you unlock through the course of the story, allowing you to clear reliable paths that let you to walk or even drive vehicles through BT territory without having to worry about getting attacked in the first place.

They may as well be stationary. They don't patrol areas or anything.

I just drop all my cargo except hematic grenades and blood packs in a safe spot, get caught on purpose and kill the BT so i can pass through without doing the sneaking. Its way less hassle and my cargo doesnt take damage this way. I'm only starting chapter 3 though so i dont know if this will work later on.

As others are saying, the game makes a much bigger deal out of how dangerous the BTs are and kind of tricks you into thinking you need to keep moving when standing still and just looking around, then moving carefully, is the key to avoiding contact.

BTs can be a fairly big deal, but primarily when you have to go through an area the first time with BTs at their highest density, and on higher difficulties where Hematic Grenades Lv. 1 alone are an extremely inefficient method of culling them.

The fact that you have to be standing still really threw me off.

I got confused when my scan didn't seem to be working and then bumping into them. Thought it was a feature, when the doc talked about the BB being defective.

I've got a better grasp of it now. Thanks for the replies.
