That's the key. Holding your breath isn't a factor in you detecting them. That's for sneaking past them once you know where they are.
They won't move until they actually detect you, so, stop, relax and scan while not moving.

The poster above is somewhat incorrect in that BTs do move on their own, but without a noise to follow they simply wander aimlessly within a small area. There are methods of dealing with BTs in a more effective manner than simply avoiding them, that you unlock through the course of the story, allowing you to clear reliable paths that let you to walk or even drive vehicles through BT territory without having to worry about getting attacked in the first place.

I got confused when my scan didn't seem to be working and then bumping into them. Thought it was a feature, when the doc talked about the BB being defective.
I've got a better grasp of it now. Thanks for the replies.
