Doesn't Kojima want you to save?
I ask this question simply because the save menu isnt available just by hitting one button. You have to go through tab and then into a submenu. Is this on purpose? Does Hideo Kojima have a problem with saving? I honestly ask this, because he is a child of a time where games didn't have a save option. Should we even be thankful that he included savegames at all?

Maybe it's also a part of his storytelling. Life doesn't have a savegame, usually.

Another way to quicksave is by resting.

Aren't you in danger of getting rained on or eaten while sleeping in the middle of nowhere? Especially because my save-habit is saving just before danger approaches. But the question still stands: Is not-saving part of the experience?

Well, your first statement, as you may know is called save scumming. You avoid all outcomes of bad decisions or bad luck. Making no judgement here, play the game the way you like/need to, but imagine the game was coded to try to lessen that, ummm, 'strategy'.

If you look into my Elder Scrolls savefolder, you will see that i have hundreds of saves. I wouldnt even dare to play without a save before loading into a dungeon/house/city. All my Elder Scrolls savegames combined are roughly beyond 5 GB of HDD space.

i probabaly dont have 5 GB of saves across all my games hahahah only time i save is when im done for for the night hahah
nah. my shrink thinks im too hardcore... funny how alot of other designers are just now imitating his ideas. learnt to swim way long ago. thats why auto-save makes YOU your enemy if you're impatient

the game saves when you sit down so you can save with one button

I don't get what this discussion is about. Some games make you find a campfire or specific site type to save. This game lets you save anytime you're not on a unique game event, in a vehicle or near danger or in a mule site. My strategy is to save before leaving any prepper site (after spending time figuring my loadout), or in the middle of a long slog. If I make the wrong decision and don't save, it's my own fault.

While sitting down to save isn't a harship, the game doesn't communicate it well. It's possible it showed up somewhere in the million-and-one tips that came up near the beginning, but for the first few hours those come every few minutes and keeping track of them is difficult.

The game auto-saves sometimes, but I don't know when. I think it saves when you sit (or maybe only when you sleep), but I only know that from discussion here, and when trying it in-game I'm left unsure that it actually works that way because it's so damn circumspect about telling you "saving game" or "this action will save your game". It vaguely hints that if Sam sleeps maybe you should take a break too - which possibly but by no means certainly hints that the game was saved. Maybe.

It's also possible that Loading icon at the lower right also says Saving at some points, but if it does it's so fast that I can't see it (and even the Loading icon is only up for a fraction of a second).

The game has 23 save slots dedicated to story checkpoints, 23 autosave slots, and 23 manual save slots.

The autosave is when you rest (even for just a second, no need to sleep) and when you activate a terminal at a distro-center or prepper (not safehouses). Manual saves are when you go into the System menu and save. For all those million-and-one tips that appear in the beginning, when you get one, they show up in the Tips section on your cufflinks (Data-Tips), including information on Saving.

Most of your infos, especially the sitting down one, I still need to confirm by testing, but thank you for them. They aren't very well communicated. There are literally dozens, if not hundreds of tips in the game, but saving kind of isnt the most communicated one. For me, a quicksave button (one of the F buttons) allways worked very well in games. Sitting down, well, i still have to look up how that even works. I know crouching as of yet. I once sat down at a virtual mushroom someone online placed. Even with that more simple approach to saving, the question still stands: Does Kojima encourage saving or would he rather not have you save? How does this fare on the philosophical point of it all?

I do believe saves are encouraged, why else would the instructions say in case of a voidout, reload a previous save? I do however feel that the idea was that you wait until after you repatriate to see if there was a voidout or not. If so, reload, if not, keep on keeping on.
What's the point in being a repatriate if I just reload a save every time I'm in a pinch?

The autosaves at the terminals I think were probably designed so you can get a do-over for any failed deliveries. Probably why autosave is only available at terminals offering orders and not the terminals at safehouses.

PS: Resting is done with the same button/key you use to crouch, just hold it down longer. Each time you rest you should see "Save Complete" at bottom right.

Just be glad you don't have to call up Heartman on the codec every time you want to save. You'd have to sitt through a long ass explanation of of some philosophical BS. :berserk:

The game autosaves and you're literally immortal. Saving is really not such a big deal. I've clocked more than 120 hours in this game and got all the achievements, yet I only manually save before exiting the game.
