If you look into my Elder Scrolls savefolder, you will see that i have hundreds of saves. I wouldnt even dare to play without a save before loading into a dungeon/house/city. All my Elder Scrolls savegames combined are roughly beyond 5 GB of HDD space.
The game auto-saves sometimes, but I don't know when. I think it saves when you sit (or maybe only when you sleep), but I only know that from discussion here, and when trying it in-game I'm left unsure that it actually works that way because it's so damn circumspect about telling you "saving game" or "this action will save your game". It vaguely hints that if Sam sleeps maybe you should take a break too - which possibly but by no means certainly hints that the game was saved. Maybe.
It's also possible that Loading icon at the lower right also says Saving at some points, but if it does it's so fast that I can't see it (and even the Loading icon is only up for a fraction of a second).
The autosave is when you rest (even for just a second, no need to sleep) and when you activate a terminal at a distro-center or prepper (not safehouses). Manual saves are when you go into the System menu and save. For all those million-and-one tips that appear in the beginning, when you get one, they show up in the Tips section on your cufflinks (Data-Tips), including information on Saving.
I do believe saves are encouraged, why else would the instructions say in case of a voidout, reload a previous save? I do however feel that the idea was that you wait until after you repatriate to see if there was a voidout or not. If so, reload, if not, keep on keeping on.
What's the point in being a repatriate if I just reload a save every time I'm in a pinch?
The autosaves at the terminals I think were probably designed so you can get a do-over for any failed deliveries. Probably why autosave is only available at terminals offering orders and not the terminals at safehouses.
PS: Resting is done with the same button/key you use to crouch, just hold it down longer. Each time you rest you should see "Save Complete" at bottom right.
