Once you get the Bola gun you basically one shot all mules. So you really never had to learn combat.
i never used the cargo that but you can run up to him and just start punching.
I forgot you could throw cargo.
Most games take every thing you have learned up to that point and use it against the final boss.
No indication that you would fight unarmed.
The game at the end constantly removes your all gear.
I think its chapter 2 where you get the Bola Gun which makes hand to hand combat pointless though out the entire game.

so while i loved like 99% of the game the couple of end boss were poorly done
I think the worst part is in the last minutes of the fight, that really close combat with you exchanging punches, that one tired me as much it tired Sam.
I eventually realized that I just needed to run around with him shooting at me until he has to reload and then you can just run up to him and punch him.
The real disappointment is the final boss IMHO. Just a huge bullet sponge that if it touches you two or three times destroys your cargo so you have to restart.
