I got stuck part way through the solve and the first hint mentions that 5s are locked into r2 and r3 in boxes 1 and 2 but at the point that I am in the puzzle I still have 5s pencilled in in r1c3 and r1c5

I feel like I am missing a step before the first hint

Yes, same here. Still can't figure what I'm missing.

I think the puzzle may not have been entered correctly? There may be a couple of digits missing from what is initially displayed.

Update: played again, completing the puzzle without using any hints. The problem seems to be with Hint #1 rather than the puzzle as I was suggesting.

I'm finding a lot of the hints are wrong. I've found hints even pointing at given cells, telling us they're "locked in" as some number other then what's given, for example.
