For the time being, you might be able to try a workaround.
right click the game > properties > set launch options > add "-nohmd" to the command line.

Two thoughts:
1. It'd be cool if the game tracked how much energy (not just time) you used in a stage and had leaderboards for that.
2. In the Aloha Beach level, I wanted to go down the store's chimney!
