Then you have 20% which is not working right or the description is wrong (I never really know what is the issue) and depending on your team/builds you face them all or not.
Problem is, frustration from those 20% overweights the 80% working.

And drain is a form of damage. Whether or not there's someone on the other end benefiting from the spell, the result for the target is the same: lowered stats. Whether you call them "damaged" or "drained", the effect is identical.
If someone punches a hole in my soda bottle, whether or not they drink what falls out has no effect on me.
Damage is a weak one - just a -1 penalty to stat-related checks per 2 point of damage. Ability damage is healed naturally by rest and (aside from Constitution damage) couldn't kill you.
Drain is much severe one - it's actually reducing your stat, so, for example - you could lose a skillpoints & access to feats (unsure if that implemented in game). Drained stats do not heal naturally & any stat drained to 0 will kill you.
Also for example curses could be source of ability damage/drain. Do you really think that curse is affecting your physiology?
