It has zero effect on romances. If they'll romance your gender, they don't care if you are a dwarf, a half-orc, a kitsune, or a dhampir. BTW, this is not always true in other CRPGs.
Choosing a race has its impacts, mainly stats feats abilities etc., but I've never noticed it much in the way of interactions/dialogues. OTOH, yes, I do see people when they speak to your companions, often discussing that Woljif is a tiefling, Lann and Wenduag are mongrels, and yes once you have Aru *everybody* asks why you're toting a succubus around with you.
I dont mind the whole romance being open with race thing.... I was more referring to the story itself.... things like woljiff commenting on your tiefling heritage and answering about abyss pull..... playing through act 1 as a tiefling felt like other characters were kinda sizing me up and trying to prop me up to be a model to help other tieflings to be treated better by other races.... but despite the whole "tieflings are treated bad" thing.... I had more invested with my character than my kitsune so far.... i mean even on tiefling run I dont recall even meeting another Kitsune in kitsune form during Act 1.... I mean I could think of some good instances for some dialogue that could be squeezed in.... like wenduag could threaten to skin your pelt for boots or something if you become weak...
how so?.... new to pathfinder myself.... but from what I saw it is a playable race....
Since we're talking about Kitsune here, there are several times where your race is commented on or when you get to comment on your race.
1. If you ask Horgus about the mongrels in the prologue he'll comment about how you're admittedly a far more exotic find.
2. If you ask Staunton's Brother if he knows everyone's face he comments about how you stand out and a fox has never joined the crusade before.
3. When you catch up to Jernaugh in Chilly Creek he comments about how people have probably never seen one of you before and might ask stupid questions.
4. When Nenio is revealed to be a Kitsune you get a unique dialogue option.
4.5 You also get multiple unique dialogue options with said character in other scenes.
5. When talking to the inkeeper at Drezen (Fye) he comments on how you're a completely normal person, and you get an option to shoot back "I guess everyone around here has fur and a tail?"
6. You get to recruit a faction of Chellaxians that want to join you because their sacred animal is a fox.
This is just off the top of my head.
You're not wrong, Kitsune are a little tonally jarring. But frankly, I'd prefer the option be there and let me decide for myself if I want the commander of the crusade to be a fox.
More weird races please, Owlcat!
... also alas, Half-Orcs still do not have a proper walking animation.
... the kitsune get their magical tail ability, it's interesting, but if you want all 8 of their magical tail abilities, you have to blow 8 feat choices on it. Seems a bit inefficient.
You get different dialogue options when talking to Nenio about how she forgot she was a Kitsune. But outside of that, I don't think I noticed any significant differences to the story, either.
The Nine Tailed Heir archetype of Sorcerer gets the Magical Tail feats for free as it levels up.
It also mentions that most people don't realize that only a very small number of Kitsune actually have the whole magical tail thing. So you're not obligated to pick it up during character progression.
So: again, what I find a bit wonky about it is if you are not a Sorcerer, you have to take them in a fixed order. If you want ability #8, its only available after first choosing 1-7. Etc. On that list, I might only want 3 of those abilities, but if they are at the end of the queue, I have to choose others I might not want first. Kinda wish it wasn't done that way. Would be a bit better if I only need 3 feat choices to take the 3 tail feats I actually wanted.
P.S. like so many things I decided to overcome this system with ToyBox, but not everybody can or does use it.
