Though martial classes are nice too being able to ride on it and get teamwork feats like outflank and seize the moment for lots of extra attacks
Regular Cleric or Crusader for divine caster.
Wouldn't play one as an arcane caster, but there's Sylvan sorcerer for this purpose.
Druid is made entirely irrelevant by the Cleric.

For difficult enemies you can cast Trick Fate on both yourself and the dog.

There is no such thing as "best class for animal companion".
If you pick divine hunter at level 1 then switch to something like sohei or cavalier or paladin, you can have any ridable companion as a mount once it reaches level 7 and it can have celestial template if you level divine hunter to level 3.
