faulchards are great. give them to a str-oriented melee with cleaving finish, cast enlarge person or better yet, legendary proportions, and enjoy reach of half of the fight with cleave
If you have Martial Proficiency you're better off staying open and using best available. If you don't and planning to use STR-based attacking as your main action economy it's worth it to invest in Fauchard and the Drezen one is good enough to last most of the game.
That said I have a Purifier Angel who chose Great Sword via background so it's not live or die unless you're planning to Cleave.
Low-end weapons with good effects can stay relevant for the cost of 1 spell slot a day all the way to the end of the game. Same goes for armor (or no armor, Magic Vestment doesn't require armor to work.)
If you want to avoid the feat tax for exotic weapons, you can also consider Grave Singer. Same crit range as fauchard but x3 crit multiplier. No reach though. It can be grabbed early by defeating a demon army in the east to get the Unholy Symbol of Rovagug and researching it (can also be made into a hand axe or battle axe).
Forgot to mention, it's a great axe.
I used Toybox to give it to me and it hasn't got any particle effects, so I assume it's not ACTUALLY in the game.
I think the only choice is Finnean honestly.
From kingmaker if I recall, I used it to great effect.
