I'd like those kind of game have templates for icon position you can register and save, to load for the desired character.
I arrange them in order of the usage. Rare used spells I kept away from the hotbar. Stuff like Cure 1 which got outdated makes space for something new. Same with remove paralysis and such I know I hardly ever use.

Oh, and I sort them in themes too. Fire spell group. Thunder spell group. etc.
You might like Stormlord's Resolve which turns all your energy attacks into lightning attacks. Enjoying Hellfire Rays as lightning attribute is something not to be ignored.
I was about to say that it hasn't really come up though because I don't have any spells that do energy damage, but I'm wondering if I misunderstood what "energy damage" is referring to. I assumed that there were spells that did generic energy damage (and I was disappointed that that ability didn't apply to things like magic missile), but is it actually the case that that just means that any elemental spell becomes lightning (e.g. fireball -> lightning fireball)?
Correct. I derivate it from protection from energy spells - basically all kind of elements there are energy spells.
That is cool too. I am making "the kind of mistake" that I have my characters learn/ready spells like I would do if I were them. So if one has fire spells, it does not mean that the other does not learn it too if its useful. Same with remove paralysis etc. I would always be too afraid in their shoes, if that one who has X gets disabled and I am lacking the heavily used spell or skill.
I think I'll still take non-lightning elemental spells sparingly for roleplay reasons, but it's good to know that this is available to me. Thanks for pointing it out!
I try to organize all chars kinda similar so regardless how much i've been drinking I can find my spell.
One thing I haven't taken is evocation school but I might do that next.
