It's probably a problem with how they do those checks. Either they can't or aren't motiviated to add party member specific modifiers. Otherwise, I'd also be complaining about how my winged Aasamir needs to make a check to jump to another roof >_>.

My animal companions pass all the athletics and mobility checks. I think it is hilarious and I love it. In my head, they are using an invisible rope tied around them to help the other characters up. Or holding the invisible pole on place to help the other characters down.

And who but Fern, the mammoth, could jump from roof top to roof top until she could pull the levers that opened the gates with her out stretched trunk? The Queen may have not recognized them as such, and they are too humble to admit it, but we all know who the real MVPs were at the siege of Drezen!
