Yep. That's the only way to "skip" them. You need just one soldier per mission.
The "end game" the devs claim to have is just more of those same side missions, over and over again...
Sometime through Act 3 a critical desicion was made. A lot of random men and women ended up eating their frags.
It was kind on embarrasing on this one occasion, I hadn't realized I had volunteered a Support for the job... after his Stim Grenade failed to kill him, I had to let the grubs have him. Very sad.
A shame we can't skip them, side missions should be optional but it is what it is. Hope the devs learn from this because I really enjoy playing the game and hoping for a sequel
