Antimatter torpedo
Just wondering, is it just a flex/for fun weapon?

2 slots to deal 22 billions of MJs in damage, that's cool, but I think anything above the first 1000 was overkill, and it costs 2 slots to equip, is there something I'm not seeing?

it gets intercepted by lazer and do 0 damage?

Like all slow moving missiles its a meme, utterly useless late game.

I noticed nuclear weapons and so I guess anti matter weapons too, have an area of effect. Perhaps it scales with the weapon power.

However for hard SF that's a bit strange to have an AoE. I doubt any kind of warhead could have a 500km radius in Space.

As far as I am aware thats how nukes in space work.
All energy gets converted to radiation and whatever gets hit by said radiation in sufficient quantities gets heated up to the point of melting/vaporizing.

According to this blog about another hard SF game : most likely not.

https://childrenofadeadearth.wordpress.com/2016/06/24/what-to-shoot/

Also according to this : https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/237915/temperature-from-gamma-rays

Gamma ray heating requires to be near to the main source and it should be centered on a specific point. Here, the impact point is definitely destroyed I'm okay with that. Another ship at 500km ? I highly doubt about it.

Unless the tippy-top end stuff is less like a warhead and simply a bomb pumped laser.

That explains how the weapons can be intercepted by point defense and still need to get 'close enough' to the target to deal damage and what is shown as AoE is more like saturation from the lasing. Going from something like a hedgehog to the 'shaped' charge nuke where the blast is focused into a tighter array of lasing material.

on the other hand, it could just be called 'missiles' and not BPL's to not confuse non-SF players since there are already a laser category of weapons and having 'bomb pumped laser' would confuse the issue.

due to lack of medium to transmit kinetic energy and lack of medium to accept heat energy nukes in space have really low range.

obviously it will destroy space station instantly when hit, because inside space station there is medium for heat and kinetic energy - station itself.

but if you explode nuke some range away, nothing will happen at all.

from the sound of it, torpedoes are a joke in this game and shouldnt even bothered to be researched. i would think they would be harder to hit/kill or have splash damage, something that makes them different from missiles that would make them a viable choice other than station smashing because if the station is unable to defend from torpedoes than its highly probable that any other weapon would do as well.

Due to the insane point defense on every alien ship, I am yet to see one of these actually hit anything.

The only reason to go Advanced Missiles route is to unlock ECM MK III.

Torpedoes need other projectiles to act as decoy against enemy's PD.

I just scored my first mothership kill using 4 missile battleships, each with:

2x light coil cannons mk2 (the 4 shots/volley version)
2x PD phasers
3x keelback missiles (the 3 shots/volley missile)
1x nemesis nuclear torpedo

When battle started, I burnt my ships forward & to the sides to get in coilgun range (650 km), combined with the other missiles I was able to overwhelm the motherhip's lasers & PD to land a nuke, instantly killing it.

----------------------------------

Although I have no idea what will require an antimatter torp when nukes can already one-shot motherships.

I guess they are here for the pleasure of saying they exist. Fun fact the description says the payload is 250gr of antimatter, while it only requires 67 micro grams to build. Soooo... they are magic missiles anyway.
