You've missed literally the most important maneuver mechanic of the early game, somehow.

It is impossible to catch any alien fleets by outspending their delta-V budget in the early game.

The only thing you can do to force a favorable engagement is to intercept them twice in rapid succession, so the second wave hits them while they're on cooldown and not allowed to evade.

a) Split your fleet in two and attack them simultaneously.

b) Rush top tier engines (Neutron Flux Torch is most cheap in terms of RP) and they will be unable to escape from you anymore.

Wow, that is new information for me.

So in case my fleet has very low delta v, all I have to do is do tranfer to their position twice ?

And make sure that you picked same time of arrival. Fleets locked for a few hours at max.

You need two fleets - with one fleet, the cooldown before your fleet can take more orders prevents you from re-intercepting while the enemy is in their evasion cooldown.

You can abuse system even more :)

First fleet could have a very high score but not your most awesome & combat-capable ships (how to build ships to abuse score is a theme for your self-education :P). Send it to intercept aliens.

Now send your proper combat fleet :) Enjoy carnage :)

From my experience, enemy carriers always run away from combat ships, even if you attack them with one crappy escort, that doesn't have any chance against them. So, you don't even have to use a high score fleet.

However, I don't know if they run away if there are other types (non-carriers) of ships in their fleet.

Same here. In act of despair I intercept fleet of two carriers with two of my last low tech escort ships. The first one pin the fleeing enemy fleet. And the second one dies in hopeless attack. So looks like they are really always tries to escape.
