In the future though, I'd recommend one of the more well established countries to start from. Trying to work from scratch and bringing up the less developed/low pop countries isn't worth the resource cost and time if you are short on either.
The 3 opening gambits are usually the US (easiest, best tech, bad inequality, low pop), Russia (easy, low everything but good boost from Kazakhstan), India (bad inequality but very good potential due to pop) and the EU/France (decent everything but need to assemble/unify the EU before it can be outstanding). China is if you are very, very, very lucky which is rare.
All of this.
It doesn't really matter if one country gets screwed over another, you can simply work towards taking the winner anyway, it just sucks when they end up ruining your future megablock plans, so having some strong allies (with nukes) is always a good idea.
Southeast Asia can be a struggle in the early game due to very low GDP per capita and education scores meaning high unrest and slower research. For that reason, it might be better to focus on the countries which don't have those problems first and fill in the blanks later. Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand is a great opening and hugely more fun than waiting 10 years for inequality to go down in the USA.
I had all of those but japan probably should have had a nuke in at least one country to dissuade USA and Russia from attacking and i had almost and i really did not have any unrest problems in any countries just felt weird to me that i could never end the wars i had with the protectorate and the initiative just randomly sent both russia and usa at me out of the blue probably because no nukes on my side i guess
