MISSILES!
Fascinated by and spent a massive few hundred hours of EI on missile engagements. I wonder for the missiles flying far away, did they deplete their DV? Wondering what is making the 18G 4DV type of missiles not able to track smaller ships as they are intended for

If the targeted ship expends more than 4km/s of its deltaV (on the vectors close to perpendicular to the vector of missiles) in the time it takes your missiles with 4km/s nominal deltaV to approach it (you can guesstimate deltaV taken from the target combat acceleration and time after your launch) then they stop tracking because they have no chance of getting to it, anymore, or they've expended all their deltaV (propellant) so they have no way of tracking.

As to shorten the time you have to launch missiles while being closer enough or while having enough relative velocity to target.

The missiles are trying to intercept the ship and sometimes it'll be no longer possible regardless of how much fuel they have left because it can be the case that they can't even burn the fuel fast enough to hit something.

It's worse against smaller ships.

Yes, running out of delta-V is exactly what happened with your missiles. That single factor is why torpedoes are generally superior to regular missiles before shaped nukes, with Artemis torpedoes being the early dominant torpedo, which then upgrade to Athenas. That have far more delta-V and thus can track and retarget significantly better.

the 18G 4DV type of missiles are indeed intended for small faster target, because you are expected to get closer to them before firing your missiles.

Or you can use them for making your effective range larger at lower relative velocity so they are intended for the maneuvering combat as using them you can currently stay outside of range of any alien weapon for the whole combat, easier - this is of course much better option than getting closer.

Here is the evidence showing how the effective range is dependant on missile deltaV: https://imgur.com/a/comparison-of-maximum-effective-missile-ranges-terra-invicta-vmBloWL

I do have noticed that high DV missiles can auto track and kill secondary targets after the initial locked targets are dead, the mid late game 10k dv torp swarm volley is an artistically pleasing sight unseen in any other game.
