Earth Space Defenses destroyed

Can Earth-based Space Defenses (e.g. the ones you build with Investment Points) be destroyed? I hadn't thought so until this game, where Paris got bombarded by a 2.4k alien fleet and it looks like my Space Defenses got destroyed.

If this is the case, it seems unbalanced. Earth-based Space Defenses are expensive vs layered arrays, so you'd expect them to be more hardened/obscured. Bombardment shouldn't be able to destroy them - maybe reduce effectiveness, but not destroy. And why aren't neighbouring areas firing back at bombarding ships? The angle of fire from Hamburg is not that different from Paris.

space defenses can be destroyed, but they are also lethally dangerous. it's likely the attacking fleet suffered major damage to several ships, if not losses.

Ah, I'll check that. Thanks. Still, I feel it's unbalanced for the investment cost and limited utility.

Also, the SDI uses current laser tech - UV phasers make it more deadly than normal IS laser. Not sure if armor tech plays a role.

No they don't. The only color laser that human Earth ground defenses can use is Green, because the other colors are screwed up by the atmosphere too much. (Alien defense installations use Violet)

Yes, they upgrade when you research those.

Yes, players frequently request for space defenses/the protect command to affect neighboring regions.

Regardless, the best way to defend Earth is to have ships in orbit.
