You start on earth as an organisation with a certain ideology and goal, move your "agents" across the playing field (just earth in the beginning, later space as well) to gain certain resources and benefits. Slowly you go to space and build a space industry and military, fight the aliens and other organisations to achieve your end game goal.
From release some features were non-existing or poorly implemented, which got added along the way. There doesnt seem to be like a solid roadmap, afaik. The devs go with a very community oriented focus here, in other words, the game is turning into what the playerbase desires it to become. I can see it become quite different from release, along the way, in a few years.
I would advise to get it now and be part of that process, but also have to warn everyone that its a very complex and uniquely different game that might not be for everyones taste (also its a slow burner, but you can speed things up in the custom new game settings).
There are a bunch of playthroughs on youtube, but remember due to its unique nature there is no one way of doing things right either. You could even bounce back once the aliens have taken over the world with their own government and all (a la XCOM 2), there is even an achievement for that.
give them your money!
Im already dreaming about Antarctica Expansion as another mini game or who knows what. XD
I don't know of any roadmap, nor a specific release date. I can image 1.0 could be a year away from now, but that is a wild guess. ETA is 'when it's done'.
The game has been pretty much feature complete since EA launch anyways. It runs quite stable, too, but can still be rough around the edges in terms of player readability/accessibility.
The past year was mostly balancing and QoL updates. In a few months there will likely be the biggest content update yet with 0.4. (https://discord.com/channels/462769550841348126/576206513148919808)
The only thing that's really "missing" in the game are the strech-goal kickstarter starting scenarios, but I image those could be added after 1.0, too. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/terrainvicta/terra-invicta)

Nope, still broken.
I have to say, that roadmap overview is great. I especially welcome all those big, fat DONEs that are already in place.
