How do you defend mines/bases?

My fleet can try to intercept and stop an enemy from bombaring, but they cna never catch them.

Defense arrays seem to do jack s***, evne with several of them a single alien ship blows up my base.

A battlestation in orbit also does nothing, as the aliens simply ingore it and blow up my ground base.

It also seems you need to research weapons to mount on the platforms individually, from the military category.

That's only for space stations. The lasers that surface defenses use are solely based on the laser global tech (IR/Visible/UV and basic/Arc/Phaser).
