Land battles vs Aliens

So i'm sure there is a million things i'm doing wrong but surely if my militech is higher than the aliens i should be able to capture their occupied territories pretty easily?

For some background the year is 2046 i control all of the United North America, all of the South American Union. the Republic of the Southern Cross, India and Pakistan. The aliens landed in Africa, while i was fighting there i must of missed something and bam they took over all of china as an alien administration and then nuked my armies in africa. lost like 8 armies in a doom stack. I finally build up some armies and decide to attack china to get the nukes away from the aliens. With 3 armies i capture lhasa, urumqi and xining. Each one seemed harder to capture than the previous. I then move on the next territory and my armies get murdered, so i retreat them. I then attack with 6 armies and still cant defeat the territory. Alien admin militech is 3.7, mine is 4.3 to 3.9 depending on country. There were no enemy troops or xenomorphs in the territory i was attacking, what am i missing?

Attacking into mountains gives the defenders a big advantage, and some techs will make the defender even stronger. But then, some techs give you a +25% against alien armies.

Also note that bombarding enemy armies from space works well if those armies are engaged in ground combat.

4.3 vs 3.7 with 10 Cohesion (which the AA will usually have) doesn't have very good odds. You should have a lot more than that.

Also, the reason they suddenly got China is because the Servants set up an Alien Facility there and granted it to the aliens.
