Orbital Point Defense 2nd weapon 8" cannon
I could have sworn this upgraded for me before. The batteries go into weapon slot one. Those upgrade fine. What goes into the 2nd slot? It just stays 8" and I have research rail cannon, coil cannon, few other techs just to see if it upgrades. Whats the deal?

One slot uses your best Mag weapon (it uses Batteries, not Cannons), one slot uses your best Laser weapon (again, Batteries), last slot uses your best PD.

Minor side note, the non-laser battery slot upgrades to plasma.

So coil gun batteries should upgrade slot 2 and replace the 8" cannon?

I'm not really clear on what you already have in it. Is the other weapon a kinetic weapon or a laser weapon? If the one that's already been upgraded is a kinetic weapon, you need laser batteries.

I have larser batteries in slot one, I just did the research for Coil Batteries and it went to slot 2. I thought I researched those must have missed them. Although after checking, it barley raise the defense value of the hab, i'm assuming its better in combat.

The 8-inch cannon is almost useless in combat. It has a very low muzzle velocity and does very little damage on hit, being incapable of breaking through almost any amount of armor except via chipping.
It's capable of little more than destroying a ship that's already disabled.

It might be able to do more if it does kinetic damage and that benefits from the actual speed of collision. With its muzzle velocity so low, its actual impact speed will almost always be considerably higher if it manages to land a hit.

Side note. PD use 1 slot batteries. LD use 2 slot batteries. And BS use 4 slot batteries. So you need to research each type of battery to make sure your different tier defence modules uses the best available weapons.

does that mean having coil guns unlocked is useful even if your not going to use them on ships ?

Yes, so as I finally discovered last night they get slotted into the 2nd weapon.

So for space LayPD 1st slot is a laser Batteries, 2nd slot Coil Batteries, 3rd slot laser point defense. The laser cannons are for the ground. Which is confusing because default 2nd weapon is the 8" "cannon" would be less confusing if it was called 8" battery so we know thats the type of weapon that goes there.

Yes. If you plan on maining lasers, still research the batteries of coils for the defenses, and if you plan on maining coils, research the phaser batteries for the defenses,. Note- even if you research the ones that require exotics, and do not have exotics, they will still be on your defense platforms (UV phasers, Mk3 Coils, et al)

Oh sweet good to know. Although this applies to ground base only? Because the space ones didn't upgrade until I researched the battery version of it.

Ground weapons upgrade immediately upon researching the appropriate global tech. They don't need a faction tech. Only spaceborne defenses do.
