Is there a way to conquer a region without defeating the nation's capital?
See title. In my case, it's about China's claim on India's Guwahati region. Is there any way to get it without conquering India in its entirety, or do I really have to conquer the capital New Delhi just to get Guwahati?

Only if you take over political power in India then "release" that region to China

I think until the war is over, you're only occupying the territory rather than incorporating it.

I believe it's possible for India to choose to conceed the contested region to end the war, but IDK if they ever would.

I see, thank you for the responses. I hope they'll make adjustments to this... if your military might is overwhelming and you held the region for a while, it should be possible to pressure them into surrendering it. Forcing us to conquer the capital and therefore trigger their self-nuking seems nonsensical.

If the war ends when the territory is in your control, it flips to you.

But not if you go for peace instead of winning the war. I had an event start a war between Russia and the Pacific Defense League, with me having the league. I liked the the faction that held russia, but wanted the one region that the PDL had a claim on, so I sent my troops, fully occupied it for a while, and set a national policy of ending the war. Russia got to keep Vladistock. There needs to be a way to only take the claimed regions and not the control points.

You're in luck. The AI will only nuke when you go for the capital as in trying to occupy it. Occupy all areas in the country except for capital. If they have an army or two left, rotate your armies in to kill them. Send 2 armies, when they land send them back out right away, send in the next army, do this a few times you can kill the nations armies without triggering the nuke.

After that wait 3-10 turns for the countries stability to fall apart. AT this point its easier to raise your public opinion, do that for a few turns, then you should be strong enough to do both a crackdown and a purge. It might only be a 25-40% chance to get the crackdown, but once it hit the purge will go through.

This way you can get your foot in the door, purge the executive, then just end the war.

Another option is to follow above steps, but to spam increase unrest instead of doing pub opion/crackpurge. When the coup happens you will have cps in the country, if you're lucky maybe even the exec right off the bat.

You're going to have to thrash the country no matter what, but you can at least avoid a nuke this way.

I tried this just now, but it flipped back to India's control instead.

Thank you for the hint. I hadn't been aware that occupying non-capital regions would cause unrest to rise like that. I didn't want to go after India as a whole just yet, but I suppose I'll do it that way.

AI also might nuke u if you are about to destroy their last unit in their capital. Even if you are not yet occupying it.

I had it with russia. Their last 2 units was on low health so they nuked moskow

Would be nice if we could sabotage a nation's missile silos to prevent nuclear launches for a while.
