What happens if I detain an alien?

I've already captured one alien and the interrogation is being researched and it should finish in a month or so. Another alien has showed up and the detain option has much higher chance of success than the assassination option. It appears as if assassination defense is aided by friendly control points (friendly for the target that is) while detain is not. If the alien is detained, does he just lose a turn. What exactly happens? Does it matter at all if it before or after the interrogation finishes?

as Resistance, you get another +x% to alien related research ( 1, 3, 5, or 10, i always forget to check. otherwise, it's like killing.

When I first started playing, not knowing better, I jumped ever alien site possible

Then one of their warships showed up to visit my LaGrange 1 station, saying hello with big nasty glowing balls of energy!
Space junk on the LaGrange 1 location, clean up on isle 1

Now I just let them do their thing, unless they mess in my territory.

Let the rest of the world have visitors
