If anything ground bases might be more vulnerable, since I think you may be able to do a marine assault without fighting their defenses.
Marines are useful in some events, and offer some resistance against enemy councilors performing control station. You can also use your marines to assault enemy habs using a councilor with the assault space asset mission. (Though you probably don't want to send a councilor out to Mars to do that.)
I haven't heard of anyone successfully attacking an enemy alien ship via boarding yet.
