In the Sci-Fi/Space genre there's stuff like Distant Worlds Ultimate or if you can ignore not having a good looking UI there's AuroraC#
Not sure if there's much in regards to their historical gs titles.
The game is fun, man. Maybe it's not for you if you feel it's too expensive.
Paradox games always seem deep, but after awhile you realize that they're pretty shallow - and only start to work after 8 dlc's or so.
This game has depth. How you choose to do things will matter down the road.
There are more than one "right" way to play and that is something I've found lacking in (most) Paradox games - I want to be torn between choices where I want to pick all of them, and I get that in this game.
Compared to the other early access games I've played I must say that I cannot remember any that was this complete.
And the space combat bit just seems horribly overcomplicated.
