I haven’t finished the game yet, but there is one practical consideration: you cannot bring millions of soldiers and thousands of ships from one star system to another. You have to take the tools to build the tools to build the ships. And we have all these nukes, so you definitely want to put your construction equipment out of range of those. The invasion has to start out covert, so that you can learn something about who controls the nukes, and try to do something about it.

If that is the case, I would have remained covert and not lithobrake any of my ships on the alien planet, alerting them to my presence.

Dumb? No, they just see us as "wildlife" so they are underestimating humanity in this scenario.

How can you remain covert if you leave your ship in orbit, unoccupied? You can’t leave a crew to defend it because they will get hungry eventually. Might as well build it to be as cheap as possible and make it a one–way mission.

I would expect them to step up to better–armed ships eventually, and to give them enough fuel to return, but that is either a lot of fuel or you have to wait years and years before you can reuse them anyway.

Aliens don't have unlimited resources (they have to build everything in the solar system) or knowledge and Humanity is not defenceless.
Nukes hurt a lot. Just asked the want to be conquerors from my game yesterday.

They came for my fleet, I split my newest ships off and left one old ship to fight. The aliens didn't even spend a single dv point chasing the main fleet.. lazy af

It could most definately be their first invasion... Honestly I think the way the game does it is very well done....

Perhaps the Aliens are not of unified mind about what to do with us. Perhaps they are fleeing a dying planet? Perhaps they don't want to just destroy us, maybe they have moral objections to what they are doing to us....

Perhaps the first ship had no idea we were on the planet at all...

Maybe this was their 5th Oxygen Nitrogen Water Planet They had found an all the rest didn't have intelligent life so they figured it would be the same on earth only to find all these earthlings mucking around ruining the place....

I mean their are a 1000 what if's here....

yes, they have special breed of patriots that run around earth and tell everyone that nothing happening and weapons made for peace.
