Some of the western made shumps are a bit easier to get into. Aeternum is a guilty pleasure of mine. Jamestown isn't really all THAT newbie friendly as you can't even beat it unless you sack up and pick the man's difficulty but it lets you run one stage at a time.
Or better join good old forums and ask there https://shmups.system11.org/
You sound so negative. Do you even like anything?(
I joined system11 around 2014. Felt pretty good back then. A bit worse in recent 3 years, but shmup genre was kinda on a quiet side overall.
Anyway, my point was that forum format is superior because of good information hierarchy (subforums/sections, threads, pages) and topics can be easily reachable years and years later, and some discussions can live for decades.
Toxic or not, i learned so much from ST section and many of informational topics. Dunno, maybe i just filter out stupid holywars when i'm reading.
While discord is a nightmare for anything serious, imho. Only good for very small communities (like <30 people) or for stuff that is needed realtime (aka multiplayer events or developer support).
There is also "something in the middle" like reddit, which is like a worse version of forums that lacks many things and, like social platforms as twitter or instagram, also focused on "only most fresh content".
I dont even want to think how much years of valuable information and heartful stuff we lost when Capcom deleted Capcom-Unity board & user fanart galleries and made teh discord server for it... Just as one of many examples. Thankfully, Shoryuken kept their wiki and boards for fighting theory, but there was more to capcom than just SF...
A little bit harder Darius Burst Chronicle Saviors, it s good to enter in the shmup world
