CEF browser for Rockstar Games Launcher crashed and could not restart
I’m honestly losing my sanity over this issue.

I’ve been playing RDR2 on steam deck for weeks now (200+ hours), and everything was working perfectly. I’ve just come to Spain from the UK for a week for work, and suddenly the game keeps crashing with the “CEF browser crashed” error no matter what I do.

I’ve tried pretty much everything I could find:
•All Proton versions (6, 7, 8, 9, hotfix, experimental, and several GE versions)
•Checked and double-checked that time zones match in both Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode
•Reinstalled the game twice
•Deleted cache and shader folders after reading it on forums

At this point, I’m running out of things to try. I’m not super tech-savvy, so I feel a bit stuck.

I also contacted Rockstar Games support, but they weren’t helpful at all.

Could anyone shed some light on this or point me in the right direction? I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks so much 🙏

Same problem here. Started after recently updating of RDR2
Same. ALMOST did everything.
With proton experimental “CEF browser error” becomes “RDR2 exited unexpectedly” and if you force the game to open on OpenGL, the game launches but the quality is very low. We might have to hope and wait for a fix to be released by Valve or Rockstar soon. Unless anybody has another solution :((
[SOLVED]
[FIX] Rockstar Launcher CEF Browser / Cloud Sync Error

SOLUTION!!!!!

I found a fix, or at least it worked for me. I went to the game directory—in my case:
/home/<your_username>/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Red Dead Redemption 2

Go to the "Redistributables" folder.

Delete the .exe files related to Rockstar Launcher and Social Club.

Restart Steam (just in case).

Launch the game.

The Rockstar Launcher should open again. Follow the prompts (Next, Next), select "YES" to cloud synchronization, and you're good to go! I’m finally back in the game.

It seems like Rockstar's cloud sync might be conflicting with Steam's cloud saves. That's just my theory, but this fixed it for me!

Thanks! You are the MAN
Your solution works!
Make sure that Proton Experimental set because in my case I faced the same error with Proton 9... and couldn't start the game. After changing it to Experimental, I answered Yes for data sync. In my case the Rockstar logo was showing for a couple of minutes. After that the game started.
Ohh I got exited when I saw your post but sadly that did not work for me! I’m still stuck in “rdr2 exited unexpectedly” :((

The only solution for now I could find was to force OpenGL instead of Vulkan with the Proton experimental and the code PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES=vulkan-1=n,b %command% -fullscreen

But the graphics are of much lower quality!

Unfortunately this did not work for me either. Didn't even get prompts about re-installing the launcher. idk what's going on honestly

Hello all, I have tried a solution found (unfortunately) through Claude:

Reset the Proton prefix (most likely fix)
This is the #1 cause of post-update breakage. The old prefix becomes stale after a game update.

mv ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1174180 ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1174180.bak
Then in Steam → RDR2 Properties → Compatibility, select Proton Experimental and hit Play. Steam will rebuild the prefix fresh.

What the command does is to rename the folder 1174180 (which is an internal Steam code for RDR2) to 1174180.bak, forcing the game to rebuild the proton prefix. I did this after at least 8 hours troubleshooting and didn't change anything else on my system - just did this and the game outright started. I am running Fedora 43 and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps.
Помог запуск с Proton 10.0-4
in my case nothing worked. Let's hope they fix it soon. Worst thing we paid, we own, yet we can't play.
I am very tech savvy. I game on Desktop on Linux Bazzite. The game worked no problem on Proton 9. I tried everything from trying Proton Experimental to renaming the prefix 117820 or whatever it is, to deleting the social club and rockstar launcher and nothing worked! This is WHY you don't have your own damn launchers on Steam! @RockstarGames! We game on steam because we hate launchers! Now we have to wait until they fix this by another update.

Sorry to hear that, I really thought that would be the fix. Try experimenting with different Proton versions—I’m currently using Proton-GE 10-34, but it also works for me on the base Steam versions, and I'm running it with Vulkan.

This isn't the first time the Rockstar launcher has broken my game; I don't get the need for external launchers when I just want to play through Steam. Anyway... I hope you get it sorted soon. I’ll keep an eye out in case I find anything else, or hopefully a future update fixes it.
Had the same issue with CEF browser crashed on a Linux Mint PC system. For me, it now runs fine again when I use Proton 10.0-4
Not sure if that's because it made a fresh prefix for Proton 10 or because there's a fix in Proton 10 that the other versions don't have, but I'm just happy it's working again. :D
I had that error with GTA IV since a few weeks and I tried the "Proton hotfix" proton version and it worked!
