Chipmunks Are Evil UPDATE
UPDATE: I'm finally free, I did it, I finally did it, I have achieved a true work of art. A single achievement...and only cost me in total about 13 and a half hours of my life. But I at last am free, I have finally finished what I truly needed to finish. Now it's time to go play RDR1 the next stage of my third person shooters through time experience lol

I've spent the last 3 hours of my life going between the 3 main locations that chipmunks are supposed to spawn. I've seen 2 of them so far, both 2 stars. Normally I'd load a save but typically loading a save for whatever reason often makes previous perfect animals you've gotten for the Hunt Request chain to get voided out and since you can only submit these animals as a full set it's not worth the risk of having to start the entire set over. I just cannot comprehend why it's gotta be this asinine to do a side-quest chain.

You can wait until the Epilogue to do all of Mrs. Hobbs requests.

That's exactly where I'm at at this point. John is rocking a 2 week beard right now from all the traveling I've been doing. I actually finally found one. Took aim with small-game arrows, dead-eye tagged the clean kill spot, let loose my arrow, it died in one hit. Became a 1 star. That was my breaking point and I'm just calling it a night and I'll try this garbage again tomorrow.

You must be missing some much needed trinkets then.

Nah just horribly unlucky, I have every trinket and talisman except for the legendary bison and cougar.
Kind. Jul 16, 2023 @ 12:55pm
i used to have good luck with them around the wapiti indian reservation, and along that main road there to about a waterfall area heading west from wapiti.
maybe 3-4 of them, but you got to go real slow and keep your eyes open for them.
also this was in online, not sp but i'm sure they spawn there too in sp.
once you can get close to wapiti just walk in to wapiti from the south side.
then cut left, and follow that road until you get to some waterfall. there's always a few along that piece of road.
i think i did them for daily challenges and it would frustrate me also.
always took a long time and felt very grindy for a daily.

Three star animal hunting can be like waiting for a bus.

You wait for hours with nothing and then two show up together.
Hehe over years of playing this amazing game, I quickly arrived to the unshakeable conclusion that the game KNOWS when you are deliberately hunting for things.

E.G, Wolves, you will never see them, however when you are not after them you get ambushed by the damned things a lot.

Cougars and the moose, and that damned panther.

I've spent two or three real life days on and off in this game hunting for a three star moose.

I don't recall if I ever found one or not but in 1200 or 1300 hours in game I've only ever seen five or six moose in total.

Go looking for a three star Moose and you'll soon wish you were looking for a three star chipmunk.

Best wishes on your hunt.

Oh for sure. You see all these animals in abundance until it's what you're actually looking for. I finally got the chipmunk. I'm now on hour 2 hunting down a robin. I've been to the three main locations they supposedly spawn at and I've gotten every bird imaginable except for the robin. I saw a single robin but couldn't switch from my binoculars to my bow in time before it vanished into the void. It's just so needlessly obnoxious.

Haha I hear you matey, I spent a week straight when I was off work with a hernia trying to find a 3 star moose and found one at dusk not far from Valentine on the Dakota river, only seen about 4 maybe 5 moose total on Xbox and PC.

Haha yeah, when you are not looking for anything, everything and its granny comes out to see you, but when you are hunting for a particular animal, almost guaranteed you will spend a millenia trying to find the damned things.

I am glad you got the chipmunk:}, hahah you will find the fabled robin, you got the chipmunk.

Happy hunting fella

What has helped me was go and equip side arms you do not care about or use along with 22 varmint rifle. Go into waist deep water (remember John can't swim so don't go too high of water or it insta zaps his stamina all the way down) and get the rifle down to around half degradation so it does less damage. As just being in water for beyond a few seconds damages all equipped guns. Bow, melee and throwables aren't effected.

Now try it against squirrels and chipmunks and see. Bam, now you don't need to try so hard with small game arrows. As long as you have the trinket that gives a chance for a good/excellent pelt you should be fine.

When you shoot the animal and see it on the ground, the star rating might not change until you either pick it up (if small like chipmunk) or skin the meat+pelt. Then double check the rating again in your Satchel.

Avoid taking down small game while on horse-back as you might have a buff that deals more damage while on horse-back

You shouldn't need to go using trainers or mods on any games first playthrough. Do that later on for a 2nd playthrough

Yup, rabbits and skunks, badgers, beavers and bears, squirrels and snakes and birds. They're are all hopping and running and flying around like it's an overcrowded zoo.

That is.. until I take my bow or rifle out. As soon as I do that? ANIMAL EMPTINESS, like there was an instantanious extinction.

Quite annoying sometimes.

Well also when you track a d run after chipmunks and rabbits, they can disappear because they have the ability to escape through holes in or at the base of trees. I've seen this happen first hand quite a few times in some areas. Also the sometimes when the memory usage is getting really high, sometimes the game engine has real-time prefetching issues where you're moving around and the world seems a little lacking or dead as far as things just not spawning in. A few times a full length train would go by me and I look and see NO visible NPCs aside from the driver. Then I follow the train for about 10-15 seconds and then the NPCs pop-into view such as the guard at the rear and the passengers inside the passenger cars.

It happens. GTA 4 and 5 have similar issues. It's just how the RAGE engine handles things.
