The animals marked aren't very exact, and generally can't be depended on. Also, especially regarding rare animals, they're mostly absent. Frankly, we'd need specifics such as what precise animal you're hunting, but I'd generally recommend just googling it.

Bow with Small Game Arrows; all small game (squirrels, frogs, etc.), all small birds (sparrow, crow, cardinal, etc.), and several medium-sized animals (all snakes, and the *smaller* medium-sized birds; chicken, duck, raven, etc.).

Varmint Rifle; all medium-sized game (rabbit, badger, iguana, etc.), the *larger* medium-sized birds (turkey, goose, eagle, etc.), and a single 'medium-large' outlier - the beaver. Note; the game's guide refers to this group as "moderate", though RDO and the community often just call them "medium".

Repeater (or Bow with regular Arrows); an odd middle ground that I call 'medium-large', consisting of the coyote, fox, turtle, (small) alligator, and a few farm animals - pig, sheep, goat. Note; the game's guide confusingly refers to this group as "medium", while RDO and the community often confuses them for large as their carcasses are in-fact large-sized.

Rifle (or Bow with regular Arrows); all large animals - deer, pronghorn, wolves, big cats, boar, rams, etc.

Rifle (or Bow with Improved / Poison Arrows, or Shotgun with Slug); all massive animals - bears, alligators, elk, moose, buffalo, and the larger farm animals - cow, ox, bull.

Lasso + Knife: most large / massive animals (pointedly *not* 'medium-large') may alternatively be cleanly killed by chasing down with a lasso and executing with a knife - particularly useful vs farm animals. Carnivores are an obvious exception to this, along with buffalo.

Otherwise, just make sure they're kill shots; for smaller animals, center-mass is good enough, while larger animals should be hit in the head or neck (or heart, if shooting it from the front), while massive animals generally need to be hit in the center-head.

... if not, you may still do enough damage to kill the target in one shot (appropriate weapon at non-critical-spot / similar weapon at critical-spot), but will yield only a 'good' kill (-1 meat, -1 potential animal products, 3-star pelt / carcass -> 2-star) ... which *may* be redeemed once processed if you have a certain trinket. Examples: varmint rifle vs small animals, repeater vs large animals.

... then again, if you use an entirely inappropriate weapon, you'll have the worst outcome - under-powered / poorly aimed (requiring 2 or more hits) and it'll yield a poor kill (-2 meat, -2 potential animal products, 3-or-2-star pelt / carcass -> 1-star) - ex; varmint rifle vs larger animals, pistol vs any animal ... or over-powered may obliterate it entirely - ex; shotgun vs small animal.

When you study the animals it will give you the info on which weapon is the best for a clean kill and perfect pelt. Hunting legendary animals you can use any weapon as you will always get a perfect pelt. Getting head shots will be a quick one shot kill (based on what i mentioned above) and no damage to the pelt.

Many of the critters that say repeater will usually still give perfect pelts with a rifle. I do it to coyotes, foxes, goats and gators all the time.
