how do arthur and john trims their beards?

i dont mean shave it all off, thats obvious, i mean how do they shorter their beard to a specific length using only a straight razor? hell how did people do it without those modern length adjusters?

Comb razors? I'm pretty sure they used combs back then.

They went to a barber . Who placed a hot towel on their face. the heat softens the skin especially with stubble.
You wouldnt use a straight razor on length of hair / beards etc thats only for the when its against skin.
My dad used to use those straight razors and he'd trim the beard with sissors first then using the straight razor shave onto the edges of the beard or moustach to make a clean cut.
