720p max settings uses basically 7 GB of VRAM
That includes MSAAX8 / Reflection MSAAX8

Reflection MSAA * 8 it by itself uses 1 GB of VRAM..

that is insane

If you were to play this game at 4K with resolution scale 2.5 you would use over 40 gigabytes of VRAM

This game looks pretty good maxed out without anti-aliasing. MSAA takes up a lot of system resources. You're better off using TAA. That will remove all jagged edges without the huge performance impact MSAA has. This method of AA can add blur to the image. This is more noticeable on lower resolutions. I play at 4K native resolution. It's not really an issue at that resolution. I still see some aliasing with MSAA unless I render the game at 8K on a 4K monitor. Many modern AAA games will fill extra RAM and VRAM you have. I was able to play this game at 8K with an RTX 2080 Ti 11GB if I turned off all forms of anti-aliasing. Modern AAA games will recognize when you have extra system RAM and GPU VRAM and load extra data in them to keep the game running smooth. It's not necessary. The game will scale based on the system RAM and GPU VRAM you have. Looks can be deceiving. You can get away with less. If you have less memory then the game will use less. If you have more then the game will use more.

This video shows how just increasing your RAM allows a game to utilize more memory just because you have it. It's not a requirement to have that amount of memory. It will just take advantage of more if you have it.

Above is absolutely right. MSAA is a massive performance hit in this game. I have a 6800XT with 16GB VRAM and can play the game on ultra settings just fine but MSAA absolutely kills my performance if I have it on.

Why would you scale up 4k... its already wicked sharp.

And any game using MSAA on reflections is going to hit performance hard. Its literally the first thing on every optimization guide.

4k native with Nvidia's DSR at 4.0 (or FSR with the same setting) = 8k
Now bump up the in game frame scaling to max.

As you have learned already, isn't a gamer level GPU out there with enough vRAM to truly max this game out, GTA V = Same

Now do the math with an actual 8k native resolution display and DSR at 4 (or FSR) with the in game frame scaling at max.

Kinda blows the mind 'eh? lol
Makes the engine a forever engine.

As Joker said, your computer by default makes available 50% of your system ram as shared video memory. You'll still run short though in the above scenarios.

Insane - Yes, but awesome!

Just to see how much resources it takes up...
