Tracking is something you can always do, as many times as you need, for any animals.
I'm not looking at birds, turkeys, vultures.
Only deer, squirrels, etc. land animals.
I recall seeing the track option the very first time I studied that type of animal but it seems you only get that one chance to track it using binoculars and then it doesn't appear again on future sightings.
And finding new land animals that I haven't already studied is impossible because I've traveled all over - except the red zone/Chapter 3.
Tracking is not available via Binoulars because you are too far away from the animal.
I just now put on cover scent and snuck up behind a whitetail buck - very close (maybe 4 horse body lengths away). That made no difference though. Binoculars still do not offer tracking option.
I can sight animals with the rifle scope and track them which brings up the progress bar that goes from white to red, but this doesn't meet the challenge criteria of using binoculars. The master hunter challenge 3 does not tally that whatsoever.
Best guess I have is that it's a one-shot deal only the very first time of encountering animals and scoping them out using binoculars. After that the animal is added to the Compendium.
those of us who figured out that you can only track ground animals not birds, and that you can only do so when you are currently NOT tracking anything else, (you can't track something with the binoculars when it says "tracking" something in the bottom right because you are already doing so, so using a gun to track something will make it so the binoculars not be able to track,) have managed to actually complete the challenge.
if that was too confusing, basically the game only lets you track one animal at a time and when you are currently tracking something, the binoculars will not let you track another thing, you have to stop tracking one to start tracking another, and if you use a gun it won't count.
I'll try this to see if it works & post if it fixes or doesn't. Thx!
After setting all key mappings/key bindings to the defaults the option to Track animals using binoculars appeared.
So, RDR2 for PC = broken (non-optimized game code) if non-default keys (custom keys) are used.
Ported games like this often lack adequate QA when they are released on pc.
And now I'm left with the PITA of re-assigning every bloody key binding without conflicts just so I can play again without resorting to the cramped & crappy default bound keys. But at least I got the solution.
Thanks Pyx !!
