How do you get the alternate outcome for the Thomas Downes Debt?

I remember when I first played this game like 5 years ago, I never finished it because Arthur got sick and I was having a tough time coping with death in the family so I couldn't keep going, RDR2 really is good, too good. Anyways, I remember on that first play through I got a different outcome where he didn't die. I caught him in his house and stole a bunch of things to collect the debt, but I'd had to reload a save and when I ended up re-doing that mission, he was outside in the corn patch and I was forced to punch him, which ultimately killed him. I got that same outcome again on this playthrough to, so I'm wondering what the pre-requisites are to get that outcome.

Edit: I haven't found anything on google, maybe I'm crazy, but I swear on my gaming setup that I got an alternate outcome my first time.

thomas downes always dies. and he is always in the corn patch. when you go collect the debt.


i thin what is happening here is there is a different guy you go to collect money from. and his place is near where thomas downes house is.


this guy you meet him in his house. and you take some of his possessions inplace of his debt. He doesnt speak english. you are remembering both that event and downes event as 1 event. your misremembering. a mixture of both events as if they were one event.

thomas downes always dies. always.



even when you do not chose to beat him when you confront downes. he still has marks on his face and blood as if he was beaten.
an no matter if you beat him or dont upon leavin he is dyin on the ground with his family next to him.

and again he is always in his corn patch or field. when you go collect the debt.

its been 5 years apparantly since you played..

5 years is plunty of time for your knowledge about the game/what you did in the game to loosen.

Okay. Yeah, this game was like a fever dream. It has really memorable missions and after a while of not playing you remember things, but not exactly as they were. That's why this game was so worth playing again. lol At least I don't have to keep driving myself mad trying to figure that out anymore, I can just accept that no matter what I do, he dies. Thank you.
