Fake country accent
No offense to the voice actor of Arthur, who is great, but can anyone else, esp those of us from the Midwest / South, pick up on Arthur's super fake country accent like I can? It sounds like he has his tongue wrapped up in the back of his mouth. I used to work with a guy from the city who would do the same thing, trying to sound country. Just saying. It's a super fake accent :)

Edit: Just looked and the guy is from the UK. I think it's actually kind of sad that Rockstar thought they could just mimic a country accent with a guy from the UK. Esp for the main character. I can 100% tell this is a person trying to sound like a country folk. All good. I don't mind :)

It's set in 1899, so maybe he sounds exactly like someone from then from the country ;)

Nah he sounds like someone from 2017 who grew up in the UK trying to do a country accent but it's all good. it would be like me trying to do a London accent, one of the dialects from the inner cities, of which there are a whole bunch. There's no way, even with a bunch of training, that someone who is actually from the area wouldn't be able to tell the difference. it's all good except this Arthur version just happens to be particularly bad at it lol. matt damon for instance is great with a southern accent, boston accent, etc. but he's matt fkn damon.

FYI, The country accents in America derived from the Queens or Kings English from the UK. Many people from England choose to settle in the south and over the years their English evolved into the country accents we have today. So in my opinion, it is fitting that the voice actor playing Arthur come from England. Remember, we all come from a melting pot of nationalities in America, if that is, if your American.

His accent sounds more film-and-tv Texas than "Old South" to me. Generally, you had a range of accents in the old South. Someone from Georgia was instantly obvious to a planter from Mississippi or a Missouri bushwhacker, for instance. 10Transistor is fully correct - what we think of as "The Southern accent" very much was a pre-RP ENGLISH accent, slowed down. An awful lot of people tend to confuse "Southern" for the "hillbilly accent" - that's actually a West Virginia mountain one that's almost a pidgin English mixed with Scots. "Poke" for bag, "hain't" for haunt, "bumfuzzled" for confused, etc. "Sigogglin", "Cattywampus" and "Fubar" mean the same thing, for instance. Which you know is based-on where you're from.

Aww...bless yer everlovin' heart. 'At's tha real South, ain't it? We do cause we love. From food t' fella'ship.

Edit: A note on "bless your heart". This phrase DOES NOT (always) mean "♥♥♥♥ you". Inflection and adjectives are important - as is the situation in which it's used. For instance, if someone says something stupid and hears, "Well bless your heart..." from someone who is pulling a "wtf?" face, then yeah, that's not a compliment. However, when they do it as I did above, they mean it quite literally as "thank you, that was thoughtful of you to say/do." The face there will be a smile and bright eyes. These aren't things Southerners are openly taught. They're gleaned via osmosis, so they can be hard to explain. The extent of Rockstar's research seems to have been watching "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "Tombstone"...

Keep in mind also the Arthur character grew up in the great northern plains, so it makes sense to not have a deep southern accent closer to what you hear from say; Sadie Adler.

Exactly this . . . his accent reminds me of friends I've had from Wyoming and Idaho, and nothing of those I've known from Texas, Louisiana and Georgia, so it really doesn't seem that far off.

I think a lot of folks are expecting the gang's accents to match the locations the story happens in, but they probably were from all over the country, just like most in the west at that time in history.

In the time that RDR2 takes place, some of the real life places in "the east" side of the game map / world are places like Mississippi and Louisiana. Places up north such as Valentine and the Cornwall Oil Field would be taken perhaps from Ohio or Pennsylvania. In short... Arthur and the rest of the gang are not from that area and are just passing through. They came to do heist in Black Water just before the game intro. The intro shows what comes afterwards with them being on the run. But before that they were out west. This is exactly why Arthur is wanted dead or alive around Black Water and out west in New Austin (areas of Texas and New Mexico) so IDK why people would expect folks within Van Der Linde gang to have any southern "country" or "hillbilly" accent. These folks didn't grow up in these areas.

his accent isn't from the south.

this whole "people from the south know what a western guy talks like" is ignorant

wyoming isn't a southern state, and they talk exactly like arthur does there.

so being upset that he doesn't sound "southern" and then calling it "fake" is hilarious.

Arty has a Arizona drawl , tempered with too many smokes and whiskey, OP doesnt recognize it as being authentic because he's some french dandy living in New York city on the welfare and the kindness of others,
he's nothing more than a prissy momma's boy afraid to confront his weakness and cowardly attitude .
why i bet his feet and hands are softer than a baby's bottom and has nary a whisker on his chin
