Need help modding the game
So many good mods but Nexus and the community make it very difficult, when I try any mods they always have a back up file also needed. Most people in Nexus post the same issue but get no real fix response. Im wondering if anyone can help me mod, or if you know of a good tutorial on youtube I can look up, iv tried multiple but have not had good luck. I even slow down the video and click step by step and it still fails.

I just want a few things. Toggle hud, weapons re balance like slow reload. Have npcs aim be worse but more damage to me, and the one where food and water matter. More weapon sway if possible. If I can get used to modding id like to add other butt these are the main ones id like to have

---Quality of Life Modding for Online Players---

This can be skipped and is not required. Mostly beneficial to online players who like to mod the story, like myself.

If we have the spare space on our PC then, before we start modding, I suggest we make a copy of the RDR2 folder. Now we have two copies. We only mod one of these copies and keep the other unmodded.

Name one copy "Red Dead Redemption 2 unmodded" and the other copy "Red Dead Redemption 2 modded" (without quotation marks).

Want to play without mods? Feel like playing online? Rename the "Red Dead Redemption 2 unmodded" folder to "Red Dead Redemption 2" (without quotation marks) and then launch the game.

Want to play with mods? Rename the "Red Dead Redemption 2 modded" folder to "Red Dead Redemption 2" (without quotation marks) and then launch the game.

This makes it so updates don't ruin our modded versions as we never have to update the modded RDR2 folder if we don't want to while, simultaneously, keeping our unmodded version up to date so we can always play online when we want without worrying about breaking or uninstalling mods.

Onto actually modding the game.

---Scripthook---

This is required.

In order for script mods to work in the first place we need some tools that will allow the mods to function in game. Those tools are Scripthook for RDR2 and Scripthook . NET for RDR2. Scripthook exists for GTAV as well. It's possible to download the wrong Scripthooks so we just want to double check and make sure we download the RDR2 versions.

1. We need to download Scripthook for RDR2 and download Scripthook . NET for RDR2.

2. We need to extract Scripthook and Scripthook . NET to our RDR2 directory (aka Root folder).

3. Create a Scripts folder inside the RDR2 directory if it doesn't already exist.

Scripthook for RDR2 and Scripthook . NET for RDR2 are now installed and should be working if we have the correct versions.

Note 1. If we choose not to use Lenny's Mod Loader then the Scripts folder is where we would extract our script mods to (this is what most tutorials show). At this point the script mods would be installed and ready to use in game but in order to turn them off we would have to remove them from the Scripts folder. The benefit I get from Lenny's Mod Loader is it gives me an on/off switch so I don't have to move mods in and out of their respective folders all the time.

Note 2. If we choose to use Lenny's Mod Loader then the Scripts folder we created will only be used for script mods that Lenny's Mod Loader can't load. All my mods are able to be loaded through LML so my Scripts folder is empty.

---Lenny's Mod Loader---

Lenny's Mod Loader is not required but it makes managing our mods much easier.

The Scripthooks are not apart of Lenny's Mod Loader, not loaded by LML, not activated/deactivated with LML, not installed with LML, and are not generated into the LML mod list so don't expect to see them there. That's normal.

This is how I installed and utilize Lenny's Mod Loader myself:

1. Let's create a folder on our desktop and name it Lennys Mod Loader.

2. Download Lenny's Mod Loader and extract the files to the Lennys Mod Loader folder we created on the desktop.

3. Open the Lennys Mod Loader folder that we created on the desktop and extracted the files to. In here, we are only going to use two folders. One titled ModLoader and the other titled ModManager.

4. Open the ModLoader folder. Drag (or copy) the files and folders from the ModLoader folder to the RDR2 directory. We have finished installing Lenny's Mod Loader.

5. The ModManager folder does not require us to move any files or folders and can be placed anywhere on our PC that we wish (so if we want to move it from our desktop to a different storage drive we can). Inside the ModManager folder is an executable file titled ModManager.UI.exe which is used to launch Lenny's Mod Loader itself. Let's launch LML with it.

6. When we launch Lenny's Mod Loader we will first have to click the Settings tab on the left column. When we click Settings, on the top of the right side window we will see it let's us choose the Game Folder. The game folder path must lead to the RDR 2 directory or Lenny's Mod Loader will not work even though it is installed correctly.

7. When we click on the mods tab, on the left column, we will notice that Lenny's Mod Loader isn't detecting any mods (because we haven't added mods to it yet) so let's add our mods to it. There are two ways to do this. Manually and automatically. Automatic detection does not always work for me so, personally, I always add mods manually. Let's close Lenny's Mod Loader and manually add some mods to it.

To add mods manually we need to open the RDR2 directory. We should have a folder titled "lml" located here (because we placed it here when installing Lenny's Mod Loader). When we download a mod (that is Lenny's Mod Manager compatible) all we have to do is extract the mod folders to the lml folder inside the RDR2 directory. Now the mods are installed in Lenny's Mod Loader.

8. Open Lenny's Mod Loader and on the left column click on the mods tab. All (compatible) mods extracted to the lml folder should now appear and have the ability to be enabled, disabled, and be used in game.

---OpenIV---

OpenIV is not required to start modding or to use script mods but it will be required for most mods that change or add things like weapon models, for example.

OpenIV also allows us to create our own modifications to the game files. Know how to create your own weapon models? OpenIV is how you would add them into the game. OpenIV would require it's own wall of text so I suggest getting used to script mods before moving onto it.

------

If you're going to reply to me please don't quote this entire post. It's too long to quote the entire thing. @JMTAotP will be just fine so my wall of text isn't repeated and won't flood the discussion, lol.

That's normal as it's only browsing folders and not files.

So I go download a mod that needs LML and I extract the file into the LML folder in the directory thats legit with the game and stuff.

But when I try to pull and find the file in mod manager it dosnt show up

The mods are not being placed where they need to be if they are not showing in the mod manager.

You put them in RDR2/lml/lml

They need to go in RDR2/lml

yea there tends to be a lot of assumptions in regards to modder's instructions.... most assume people know what the acronym "LML" is, assume people know how to decompress zipped files, and assume that everything should just be common knowledge and second nature....

when i first attempted modding, good god i had absolutely no idea what this "lml" crap was.... "just drop the files in the lml".... im sorry, what? lol...but then over time, things clicked and finally figure some of the assumed bits out on my own...

Truth be told, to this day i still dont mod the way its intended to be.... mainly due to the fact that i have trust issues. I have 7zip but not winrar, and seems most manual downloads are rar files that 7zip cant do.... my trust issues pretty much prevent me from finding a trusted download for winrar.

but i did manage to find a workaround for rar files ... at least for the ones that have a vortex option..... install with mod manager, then open the mod folder that vortex creates, then you have access to the decompressed files that way.... so basically using vortex as an alternative to winrar.

anywho, theres my 2 cents... best of luck to you

My 7zip extracts RAR files. It just can't pack them. You sure your 7zip can't? Maybe reinstall it.

Kenny did you still need help, im still sort of a newbie but thanks to JMT I got a better understanding on how to mod RDR2. But if you still need help lmk. That post I put as awnser if read super carefully should work, it was written well but I made a mistake in how I drag and dropped files I needed.

Westford you good still need help?

I spend weeks on my own and only frustrated myself on missing key steps. So I know how it feels and if you need help ill do my best, im still a begginer but can mod a few things now

Also some other mods needs extra step in reading carefully, I definatly cant do them all but I know a few I can get to work
