Horse temperament
what a banger of an idea it was to make temperament random on a multi hundred dollar purchase. I'm sure the mere thought of the time rockstar devs have wasted with that decision makes them harder than their own wives.

I earnestly don't think it's entirely RNG - never met a temperant Arabian or a crazy Andalusian. Also, the Thoroughbreds you get for free with the Ultimate Edition seem to have a static temperament between characters / play-throughs, but maybe they're a special case. Either/or, it certainly would be nice if the devs cared; just give each horse a stat that reflected this value, so we could at least make an informed decision when choosing...

Edit; not that OP asked, but for those curious, I'd generally recommend larger horse breeds, though there's always exceptions. Their 'role' may be a factor (War vs Work, etc.), but in my experience this is less relevant. And in any case, if you park any horse next to a full-size alligator, it will still bolt - there's just a certain variance in timing.

Being doordashed to alligators is all fine and good but there's an undeniable difference between my starting horse that will stare deadeyed at a 20 man firefight without a shred of self preservation and walk up the moment I whistle and the small mustang that would use all its impressive speed to relocate itself to the next area code the moment someone yelled near it.
The issue with recommendations is they vary everywhere and nobody is willing to grind enough to go buy dozens of each horse to see if there's any statistical reality to any breed favoring temperaments. I've also heard gender mentioned but again, most accounts are basing it on the assumption that real life is mirrored in the game. No data exists, no code digging has revealed anything, it's just guesswork. So it is functionally random to me, Thank for the recommendation, I'll give the roulette another spin based on your advice the next time I have a thousand bucks to blow

And that's actually why I doubt the role having much impact - you'd think a "War" horse would be well-mannered, but I've heard from multiple sources that the Mustang tends to be skittish, which i then point to their relatively small stature - sure, they aren't as small as the Arabian or Morgan, but certainly smaller than the Shire or Ardennes.

Hm. I dont quite get what is meant with that.

Different horses have different types of behaviour towards things? I thought all horses were equally scared of the same things.

But I am on a warpath with horses anyways, they scare way too much way too easy way too often. I dont think horses should be quite THIS finnicky. I mean, the beasts perfectly spot a snake hidden in the tallest of grass. And they get scared randomly.

Combined with the tantrum from low Stamina where the horse constantly huffs and puffs and grumbles and whines, just not enjoyable.

How many times I wished for an option to take a cane and be allowed to whip the horse to punish it, until it learns that tantrums = forbidden.

Still, the system of riding and controlling is better than most if not all other games i played that have horses.
Why do you think they dropped the game, rushed the ending, and didn’t release any DLCs?

The product manager tried to go straight, and the horse goes left or right. Devs: 'Don’t worry, mate, just give us 50 more million and we’ll fix all of this.'
Product manager: 'And what about the horse?'
Devs: 'Oh, the horse? Yeah, we're thinking of adding a new DLC... 'Horse Direction Pack.' Coming soon!'

Once I get my horses to max bonding they seem a lot more chill and won't buck me off quite as often. Even arabians once I have them max bonded will mostly behave for me. One key thing is to be constantly calming your horse if you know you're going through the swamp or something, so that's just a skill issue you have to work through yourself.

Wait, I havent finished the story yet, but .... is the game a repetition of Metal Gear Solid 5?

You know, the game where the Devs and the lead Designer already were at war before Development began and towards the end, nobody wanted to even be there anymore and they just ♥♥♥♥ out a random, bad ending?

Damn, thinking that this is a Rockstar title, i expected a bit better of it...

Colourful and truthful view of the whole matter, bravo.

Meh, constantly stopping and having to calm that flea and tick infested dumbass of a horse is not quite a "skill issue", more like an issue of how resistant someone is towards dumb ass mechanics like that.

That being said, I dont even calm my horse anymore. I just avoid the swamps, and if the horse spooks, I go around, or get off and walk. Ain't got no time to babysit a crybaby animal.

You can still be full gallop and hold the calm button... Holding is more effective than just tapping it once/repeatedly. This is how I know it's a skill issue if you don't understand game mechanics like that and default to just calling them stupid instead of simply admitting your ignorance.

Oh I know you can hold the button. I just dont want to do it, as it is a stupid mechanic. I guess i will just carry more TNT and blow up the horse when it needs punishing.

Glad I'm able to learn and actually use mechanics as designed rather than just crying about them and pitching a fit.

I don't mind the controls themselves just that I have no control over the temperament. People say there's literally no difference and while that might be true between breeds I cannot believe that holds from horse to horse, the difference was so extreme I just don't buy it. If it's my psychosis then it's consistent.

like I said my issue wasn't animals, I accept they'll make my horse freak out so I don't get near them, the issue is when they'll whip away from me while i'm on a time crunch, while getting shot so I can't even shoot back because I have to keep whistling for each shot that zips by, nevermind trying to hogtie and get someone on the back of it. Even the "they'll never panic from gunshots if you're on them" thing isn't reflective of my experience, it did it several times to me in the last day or two. It's annoying since most of the game is getting shot at and they gave me a horse that simply will not tolerate it, when I switched back to my starting horse the problems disappear. So I spent my money on a horse that is less useful in practice than the starter horse. So while sure I can just stick to it and be fine, it can't run very far or fast and shocking as it is I thought buying an upgrade would actually feel like one, rather than just giving me a situation that's worse than having no horse.

I'm not really sure what situations you would be in where you have to get on your horse without killing all of the enemies shooting at you, you just have to learn to deal with enemies before getting on your horse I guess, use cover and deadeye more often.
Every horse, even the most expensive ones, are programmed to flee from gunshots regardless of if you're fully bonded with them or not, so I'm unsure how you think the starter horse is somehow better, in my experience through my three playthroughs the starter horse never acted any different from any others.
There definitely is a noticeable speed difference between basic horses like a morgan or kentucky saddler and the expensive horses like arabian or missouri fox trotter. Also have to remember to upgrade your saddle and pay attention to the stats on it, not sure if saddles affect horse temper though.
