Punched my horse, lost my hat
Hi all. I'm new to the game and I just lost my hat. I accidentally hit my horse (pressed "i" instead of "e"), so I reloaded and now the hat is gone.
What's going on?

Your hat should be on your horse in the horse inventory if you're playing the story mode.

Before I figured out I could buy hats, and find them on my horse inventory, I discovered a whole bunch of towns people and NPCs in the wilderness that had hats, many of them you can't buy
The game actually makes a big deal about hats, and provides a lot of variety, but there are limitations. Remember that you have a wardrobe at camp where you can equip any *acquired* hat, and you may store a few of them on your horse where you can access them on-the-go.

So far as acquired hats, one might say there are several categories. Firstly, owned hats - either the player already owns, are awarded or given freely, or the player may purchase (~30 total). Then, crafted hats - a particular vendor found in the world will craft various items for you, after being provided the materials and money to do so (~30 total). Then, found hats - unique hats found abandoned in the world (11 total). Then, stolen hats - similar to 'found', but must first be removed and taken off of certain NPCs (~40) total).

Lastly, there's all the other hats that may be taken off NPCs, but aren't permanently acquired through those means - you may wear the hat, but you can't store the hat, and it will eventually disappear. However, most of these are just duplicates or variations of acquirable hats.

Thx for a VERY thorough answer, I think I know everything there is to know about hats in RDR2 now :-)
