Sudden appearance of massive treasure chest

So, I'm hunting deer below Caliban's Seat, and when I go to skin the deer a small explosion occurs and a treasure chest suddenly appears next to the dead deer. I open in and get a massive amount of reward items, ammo, potions, etc. plus 20 GOLD and $1600 CASH!!! So I have to know is this an actual game feature or some sort of fortuitous glitch. One important note this is in Red Dead Online.

It was a hacker/griefer messing with your game.

If you usually play online alone or with select friends then follow this guys instructions and create your own private lobby, any friends with the same file and password will always log into your game.

I'd delete your post- that's one of the very few things R* would actually get involved over (or did, don't know if they still care). They supposedly viewed it as stealing since they wanted you to spend real money to buy gold for use in the game. There were reports here some time back where players said they were suddenly banned and it appeared that periodically R* would scan for players suddenly gaining greater than usual amounts of money/gold- no idea how true that is, but there were multiple reports of it happening. While there are generous modders who are actually trying to help people, there are also modders who would spawn the chests then when you opened them they'd report you- no idea why folks act like that, messing with other players has never made any sense to me though.

Unless you know who you're dealing with, it's best just to walk away from anything that spontaneously spawns, whether it's chests, legendary animals or whatever.
