Random encounters reset me to camp?

I'm still new to the game, but I've been involved in 2 random encounters so far. Each time it cuts half way through to the clouds briefly, then I appear back at the camp. Not sure if this is normal or not. I'm not being killed that I know of. No death scene or anything.

Might be story missions not random encounters

I can see why you'd think that since I didn't explain the scenarios. So in one scenario, I was riding into Valentine and a stagecoach pulled out to block the road and rob me. I rode away from them and continued to town. Another scenario I was coming up to a bounty target and a group of riders close by rode up and broke someone out of a transport wagon.

I wasn't on a mission, so logic tells me they were random.

EDIT: Just had another encounter where I tried taking herded sheep from a rancher. He shot at me a few times and before I could pull out my pistol to kill him, he just died on top of his horse. In the upper left side of the screen it said "Enemies were led to camp". Then the screen went to the clouds and put me back at camp.

Story mode? Was it the sheep herder near your camp in the Heartlands? If you have a fight going on and you get too close to the camp the other gang members take care of it I think, but they won't be pleased with you leading people to their secret hideout ;)
