2025 ERR_GFX_STATE 50XX GPU Fixes
Game crashes a few seconds after loading into and moving around the open world.

Easy Fix: Under graphics settings, set parallax occlusion mapping to low, while other settings to max or to your liking even if set to DirectX 12.

A roundabout "fix" for those who want to have all settings maxed out regardless would be to edit system.xml file every time before launching your game to set it to vulkan then set it to DirectX 12 ingame and max out all settings you want:
1. Go to Documents, then
2. Rockstar Games folder, then
3. Red Dead Redemption folder, then
4. Settings, then
5. Right click system (or system.xml) to open it with notepad, then
6. You'll see this line <API>kSettingAPI_DX12</API>, change DX12 to Vulkan and should look like this <API>kSettingAPI_Vulkan</API>, then hit save (ctrl+s or click file and then save)
7. Launch game and go to graphics and max out every setting you want and switch back DirectX 12 before going into the open world.

Haven't had a single ERR_GFX_STATE crash so far with these methods, so, hopefully, it works for others.

You are a HERO!! I have been fighting with these random crashes for longer than I care to admit! Played a good couple of hours with everything maxed AND with my overclock using your Easy Fix! What a silly issue. THANK YOU!!
I actually stopped playing RDO recently due to this GFX_STATE BS. I might try your solution to check if it works for me. I'm just so tired of jumping through endless hoops to make this game work.
Thank you, this worked for me with a RTX 5080. Couldn't play the game longer than 1-2mins before it crashing. Now I haven't had a single crash with your fix.
It worked. But does it really apply settings? The game says that it needs to restart to apply them. Sad to see that it's probably never going to be patched

The first one keeps your settings. The second one you have to do before every launch.

No! If you start with Vulkan, then switch to dx12 WITHOUT restarting the game, you will STAY at Vulkan.

But: thats the way to go! Use Vulkan to get rid of pointless crashes.

yeah but for me that does not work as there is no settings folder.
That might be a placebo effect, but DX12 looks a bit sharper, and the draw distance is way better. I get that both are graphical APIs and should not affect visuals in any way. But I do wonder if that's really true.

DX12 is definitely better. Vulkan can be good for older systems for stability reasons.

What GPU and CPU are you using?
I think it's finally fixed with the new nvidia driver. No longer crashes with DX12 and parallax occlusion mapping set to Ultra. At least right away, usually it was during a scene change

Unfortunately, the newest nvidia driver crashes other games such as MHWilds. I haven't tested it on RDR2 though.

yeah it crashes too. I tried Vulcan and DX12 in Singleplayer on Ultra Settings all the Way and it Crashes at some point. Have the latest driver from may 12th, the 576.40

With that driver, does it still crash if you set parallax occlusion to low while the rest are maxed? If so, then I'll stick to 572.83.
