Just do quests and you get xp, cash and a little gold. And then you spend that gold buying a different job or skill which gives you quests that earn you xp in that job of skill and cash and a little gold, which you spend on other jobs and skills, until you have all the jobs and all the skills and then you spend gold on items like clothes or horses pr weapons. (Don't waste gold on items at first). As for what quests at first, you should have a few quests in your mail. Also keep an eye out for NPCs up on mountains cos many are treasure hunters and will sell you a treasure map to treasures with cash and gold. And some will pretend they are not treasure hunters and will try and get away and so here's when you can do evil and rob them for their treasure map. Actually, you probably could rob them all, even the ones selling the map. I never thought to try that. Anyways, good hunting.

When just starting out, you'd likely need to focus on...
Free-Roam missions: there are 'strangers' scattered around the world, most with at least two locations (will show up at either, whichever is closest to you). They offer relatively generic and repetitive missions, but completing them will earn a small amount of gold each time, ironically increasing the longer the mission takes (0.08 > 0.16 > etc).
Daily Challenges: Each day (resets at 1am EST), you'll have 7 tasks to complete, each task providing a small amount of gold, and a bit of bonus gold (x3) if you complete all 7 in a day. If you complete at least one challenge per consecutive day, you'll eventually earn streak bonuses (x1.5 per week) impacting the amount of gold earned per challenge. Ex: during the first week, you can earn up to 1.0 gold per day; 0.1 * 7 + 0.3, tho during the fourth week, you could then potentially earn 2.5 gold per day; 0.25 * 7 + 0.75.
Treasure Maps: You'll find a few as a rare drop from killing hostile NPCs, or as a rare encounter (treasure hunters wanting to sell it, or a 'treasure tree'), but you'll also receive one in the mail for every 5 levels achieved, which happens relatively quickly early-on. These are by far the most profitable (earning ~1.0 gold per treasure, vs the ~0.1 you'll earn at first regarding each challenge and mission), which is why these maps are so rare.

After earning your first 15 gold, you can branch out into...
Roles: There are 5 roles to unlock, each with their own benefits, but if gold income is your priority, I'd recommend unlocking the Bounty Hunter first. For most, it's relatively fun (very similar to the bounty hunting in RDR2 Story) if not a bit repetitive, the perks for progressing the role are relatively useful, and (*unlike the other roles*) completing the related missions earn you gold - similar to the free-roam missions.
Role Challenges: As you unlock roles and rank up within each, there will be additional role-specific daily challenges provided, with a separate bonus that's granted after completing 9 challenges. This becomes relatively easy once you've progressed far enough; after unlocking all 5 roles and reaching rank 10 in each, you'll have 3 challenges available for each role = 15 to choose from. These challenges are also governed by the same streak as the Daily Challenges, so potentially earning 1.2 gold per day the first week, and up to 3.0 gold per day during the fourth week.

Lastly, being frugal helps - spending your first ~100 gold on anything *other* than unlocking roles is incredibly wasteful, imo. You will essentially be impeding the rate at which you're able to earn gold (and money / experience), there'by reducing the total amount you'll ever earn. Also, keep an eye out for monthly discounts - if you have the spare gold, the Naturalist Role is still 'on special' for the next 2 weeks, and I believe the Collector Role is due for a special next month (not guaranteed, tho). Edit; note, neither of these roles will immediately provide you with gold income, but they can yield a lot of money and experience (which gets you treasure maps), along with the opportunity of completing additional daily challenges.
