Yukon Nik bounty

The hell happened to this bounty? I remember playing it years ago and having no problems, I started playing again and no matter what I do in the dead eye encounter he dies. I resorted to killing his hostage after like 8 attempts which is obviously not what you're supposed to do because it doesn't immediately end dead eye and you just sit there for like 10 seconds before it ends. I've tried shooting his hand and his gun to disarm him, shooting his shoulder or legs like some people online suggest but it does nothing but flinch him until he dies. In videos I've watched he'll fall to the ground into fetal position but still be alive, I out of all my attempts I could not get this to happen. What the hell am I actually supposed to do???

look for the 'red zone' on the hostages badge/heart, shoot that, then lasso/hogtie Nik

His head is also red and results in what I said above, next time I play the bounty I'll try this though.
