For PC, "Sprint" with a Horse is the same key as "Sprint" when running.

Hold <LShift> to Sprint - and your horse will soon reach max gallop speed and burn stamina.

"Tapping" the <LShift> key, (pressing and releasing), while on Horse will cause your horse to Sprint and burn Stamina, then Slow and regain Stamina

It has been stated that you can use "Tapping" at very specific timing that will keep your Horse near max Speed without burning Stamina.

i've never managed to get it to work comfortably (but i consider it completely unnecessary)

But "Tapping" does not make your horse run faster than a max Sprint Gallop (from holding LShft).

Never seen a difference, but have heard that before.

Key is the W key and the claim was to tap in rhythm with the horse.
Still needed to press and hold shift for the horse to sprint.

May have worked on the consoles though?
evidently the consoles can even back up a horse, don't own one so nfi if they really can.

y have find this
Tap faster to make the horse speed up then tap in rythm of the horse's motion to save its stamina.
or
I've finally got it down. What I've found is hit the button in sequence to the two gallop sounds. So front feet, back feet, button. 1, 2, 3 kind of thing, hitting the button on the third beat every time

I found using the button every 6 hoof gallop sounds (once you max out the bond with the horse) using the top tier gear on said horse can let you go from one end of the map to the other without running out of stamina.

You yell at the monitor FASTER HORSE!

W is used just to hold the direction is all. As you ride around you will need to use WASD for Horse depending on direction you move the camera. So for example if I move camera so character is looking to the right, I'll need to then use A key to act as forward for the horse.

While holding W, use SHIFT key. Tap it once for slow gallop speed, twice for sprint speed, hold down for lengthy period to go full speed.

CTRL key does the opposite of SHIFT.

While horse is standing still, you can double-tap CTRL key to have the horse walk backwards.

Once you have a Horse to LVL4 Bonding, while in a full sprint, press G to regain a burst of stamina, allow 15 secs cool down before able to do that again.

WASD for directional movement, SHIFT/CTRL for Gas/Brake

If this is too hard for players to understand, maybe should use a handheld controller instead.

Also something I learned which is quite odd. Often times when I skin certain animals the horse likes to take off and get some distance. If I hold down H key at the same time I go to skin an animal, the horse stays in place.

tapping LShift is just for stamina not for get a extra boost ?

Once you're at full speed, tapping it more doesn't do anything.

For Riding Horses the speeds works like this:
Walking
Trotting
Galloping < Fast enough that you can not Pet, Rub, or use Brush
Sprinting < This will drain Stamina
Full Speed < This will drain Stamina

However, Pet and Calm are the same button.

SHIFT just appears to work at later times even when at full speed because sometimes when Horse moves over certain terrain, rail-tracks and such, it can sometimes slow down. So double-tapping SHIFT again should get you back to full speed again.

How do you literally not own a 360 controller for your PC? They've been the standard PC gamepad for almost 20 years.

also you dont need to tap any button on the keyboard anways. Your horse runs at full gallop by simply holding down the sprint button when using kb/m

Calming a horse that's sprinting restores stamina.
Only found out that little trick a few months back myself.
Over 1,000 hours in & never knew that! rofl

FYI, there is a mod that changes that mechanic for controllers into how it works for keyboard and mouse. It also removes the speed limit in towns, so be careful. Mod uses ScriptHookRDR2, so it's only for single player. :)
